Глава 12	Chapter 12

1	1
Нетлінний Твій дух перебуває в усьому.	For thine incorruptible Spirit is in all things.

Тому заблудлих Ти мало-помалу викриваєш і, нагадуючи їм, у чому вони згрішають, напоумляєш, щоб вони, відступивши від зла, увірували у Тебе, Господи.	Therefore chastenest thou them by little and little that offend, and warnest them by putting them in remembrance wherein they have offended, that leaving their wickedness they may believe on thee, O Lord.

Так, погребувавши древніми жителями святої землі Твоєї,	For it was thy will to destroy by the hands of our fathers both those old inhabitants of thy holy land,

які звершували ненависні діла чаклувань і нечестиві жертвоприношення,	whom thou hatedst for doing most odious works of witchcrafts, and wicked sacrifices;
5	5
і безжалісними убивцями дітей, і тими, що на жертовних бенкетах пожирали нутрощі людської плоті і крови у таємних зібраннях,	and also those merciless murderers of children, and devourers of man's flesh, and the feasts of blood,

і батьками, які убивали безпомічні душі, — Ти зволив знищити їх руками батьків наших,	with their priests out of the midst of their idolatrous crew, and the parents, that killed with their own hands souls destitute of help:

щоб земля, найдорожча за все у Тебе, прийняла достойне населення чад Божих.	that the land, which thou esteemedst above all other, might receive a worthy colony of God's children.
8	8
Але і їх, як людей, Ти щадив, пославши предтечами воїнства Твого шершнів, щоб вони помалу знищували їх.	Nevertheless even those thou sparedst as men, and didst send wasps, forerunners of thine host, to destroy them by little and little.
9	9
Хоч не неможливо було Тобі війною підкорити нечестивих праведним, або знищити їх страшними звірами, або грізним словом у один раз;	Not that thou wast unable to bring the ungodly under the hand of the righteous in battle, or to destroy them at once with cruel beasts, or with one rough word:

але Ти, помалу караючи їх, давав місце покаянню, знаючи однак, що плем’я їх негідне і зло їх уроджене, і помисли їх не зміняться повіки.	but executing thy judgments upon them by little and little, thou gavest them place of repentance, not being ignorant that they were a naughty generation, and that their malice was bred in them, and that their cogitation would never be changed.

Бо сім’я їх було прокляте від початку, і не з побоювання перед будь-ким Ти допускав безкарність гріхів їхніх.	For it was a cursed seed from the beginning; neither didst thou for fear of any man give them pardon for those things wherein they sinned.

Бо хто скаже: «що Ти зробив?» або хто протистане суду Твоєму? і хто звинуватить Тебе у знищенні народів, які Ти створив? Або який захисник прийде до Тебе, із клопотанням за неправедних людей?	For who shall say, What hast thou done? or who shall withstand thy judgment? or who shall accuse thee for the nations that perish, whom thou hast made? or who shall come to stand against thee, to be revenged for the unrighteous men?

Бо, крім Тебе, немає Бога, який має піклування про усіх, щоб доводити Тобі, що Ти несправедливо судив.	For neither is there any God but thou that careth for all, to whom thou mightest shew that thy judgment is not unright.
14	14
Ні цар, ні володар не в змозі з’явитися до Тебе на очі за тих, яких Ти знищив.	Neither shall king or tyrant be able to set his face against thee for any whom thou hast punished.
15	15
Будучи праведним, Ти усім керуєш праведно, вважаючи невластивим Твоїй силі засудити того, хто не заслуговує покарання.	Forsomuch then as thou art righteous thyself, thou orderest all things righteously: thinking it not agreeable with thy power to condemn him that hath not deserved to be punished.
16	16
Бо сила Твоя є початок правди, і те саме, що Ти володарюєш над усіма, налаштовує Тебе щадити усіх.	For thy power is the beginning of righteousness, and because thou art the Lord of all, it maketh thee to be gracious unto all.
17	17
Силу Твою Ти показуєш тим, хто не вірує всемогутності Твоїй, і у тих, що не визнають Тебе, викриваєш зухвалість;	For when men will not believe that thou art of a full power, thou shewest thy strength, and among them that know it thou makest their boldness manifest.
18	18
але, володіючи силою, Ти судиш поблажливо й керуєш нами з великою милістю, бо могутність Твоя завжди у Твоїй волі.	But thou, mastering thy power, judgest with equity, and orderest us with great favour: for thou mayest use power when thou wilt.
19	19
Але такими ділами Ти повчав народ Твій, що праведний повинен бути людинолюбним, і вселяв у синів Твоїх благу надію, що Ти даєш час покаянню у гріхах.	But by such works hast thou taught thy people that the just man should be merciful, and hast made thy children to be of a good hope that thou givest repentance for sins.

Бо якщо ворогів синів Твоїх і достойних смерти Ти карав із такою поблажливістю і пощадою, даючи їм час і спонуку, щоб визволитися від зла,	For if thou didst punish the enemies of thy children, and the condemned to death, with such deliberation, giving them time and place whereby they might be delivered from their malice:

то з якою увагою Ти судив синів Твоїх, батькам яких Ти дав клятви і завіти благих обітувань!	with how great circumspection didst thou judge thine own sons, unto whose fathers thou hast sworn, and made covenants of good promises?
22	22
Отже, напоумлюючи нас, Ти караєш ворогів наших тисячократно, щоб ми, коли судимо, помишляли про Твою благість і, коли буваємо осуджені, очікували помилування.	Therefore, whereas thou dost chasten us, thou scourgest our enemies a thousand times more, to the intent that, when we judge, we should carefully think of thy goodness, and when we ourselves are judged, we should look for mercy.

Тому-то і тих нечестивих, які проводили життя нерозумно, Ти мучив власними їхніми мерзотами,	Wherefore, whereas men have lived dissolutely and unrighteously, thou hast tormented them with their own abominations.
24	24
бо вони дуже далеко ухилилися на путях омани, обманюючись подібно до нерозумних дітей і шануючи за богів тих із тварин, які навіть і у ворогів були зневаженими.	For they went astray very far in the ways of error, and held them for gods, which even among the beasts of their enemies were despised, being deceived, as children of no understanding.

Тому, як нерозумним дітям, на посміяння послав Ти їм і покарання.	Therefore unto them, as to children without the use of reason, thou didst send a judgment to mock them.
26	26
Але, не врозумившись викривальним посміянням, вони терпіли заслужений суд Божий.	But they that would not be reformed by that correction, wherein he dallied with them, shall feel a judgment worthy of God.
27	27
Бо те, що вони самі терпіли з досадою, те саме побачивши на тих, яких вважали богами і через яких вони каралися, вони пізнали Бога істинного, Якого раніше відрікалися знати;	For, look, for what things they grudged, when they were punished, that is, for them whom they thought to be gods; now being punished in them, when they saw it, they acknowledged him to be the true God, whom before they denied to know; and therefore came extreme damnation upon them.

тому і прийшов на них остаточний осуд.
