Глава 14	Chapter 14

1	1
Ще: хтось, збираючись плисти і перепливати люті хвилі, кличе на допомогу дерево, що слабкіше за корабель, який його носить;	Again, one preparing himself to sail, and about to pass through the raging waves, calleth upon a piece of wood more rotten than the vessel that carrieth him.
2	2
бо прагнення до надбань вигадало його, а художник вправно влаштував,	For verily desire of gain devised that, and the workman built it by his skill.
3	3
але промисел Твій, Отче, керує кораблем, бо Ти дав і путь у морі і безпечний шлях у хвилях;	But thy providence, O Father, governeth it: for thou hast made a way in the sea, and a safe path in the waves;
4	4
показуючи, що Ти можеш від усього спасати, хоч би хто вирушав у море і без уміння.	shewing that thou canst save from all danger: yea, though a man went to sea without art.
5	5
Ти хочеш, щоб не марні були діла Твоєї премудрости; тому люди довіряють своє життя найменшому дереву і рятуються, проходячи по хвилях на човні.	Nevertheless thou wouldest not that the works of thy wisdom should be idle, and therefore do men commit their lives to a small piece of wood, and passing the rough sea in a weak vessel are saved.

Бо і спочатку, коли знищувані були горді велетні, надія світу, керована Твоєю рукою, використавши корабель, залишила світу сім’я роду.	For in the old time also, when the proud giants perished, the hope of the world governed by thy hand escaped in a weak vessel, and left to all ages a seed of generation.

Благословенне дерево, через яке буває правда!	For blessed is the wood whereby righteousness cometh.
8	8
А це рукотворне прокляте і саме, і той, хто зробив його, — за те, що зробив; а це тлінне назване богом.	But that which is made with hands is cursed, as well it, as he that made it: he, because he made it: and it, because, being corruptible, it was called God.
9	9
Бо однаково ненависні Богу і нечестивець і нечестя його;	For the ungodly and his ungodliness are both alike hateful unto God.
10	10
і зроблене разом із тим, хто зробив, буде покаране.	For that which is made shall be punished together with him that made it.
11	11
Тому і на ідолів язичницьких буде суд, оскільки вони серед створіння Божого зробилися мерзотою, спокусою душ людських і сіттю для ніг нерозумних.	Therefore even upon the idols of the Gentiles shall there be a visitation: because in the creature of God they are become an abomination, and stumblingblocks to the souls of men, and a snare to the feet of the unwise.

Бо вигадка ідолів — початок блуду, і винахід їх — розтління життя.	For the devising of idols was the beginning of spiritual fornication, and the invention of them the corruption of life.
13	13
Не було їх спочатку, і не повіки вони будуть.	For neither were they from the beginning, neither shall they be for ever.
14	14
Вони увійшли у світ через людське марнославство, і тому близький призначений їм кінець.	For by the vain glory of men they entered into the world, and therefore shall they come shortly to an end.
15	15
Батько, який мучиться гіркою скорботою щодо рано померлого сина, зробивши зображення його, як уже мертвої людини, потім став шанувати його, як бога, і передав підвладним таємниці і жертвоприношення.	For a father afflicted with untimely mourning, when he hath made an image of his child soon taken away, now honoured him as a god, which was then a dead man, and delivered to those that were under him ceremonies and sacrifices.

Потім цього нечестивого звичаю, що з часом утвердився, дотримувалися, як закону, і за повелінням володарів статую шанували, як божество.	Thus in process of time an ungodly custom grown strong was kept as a law, and graven images were worshipped by the commandments of kings.

Кого в лице люди не могли шанувати через віддаленість проживання, того віддалене лице вони зображали: робили видимий образ шанованого царя, щоб цією старанністю полестити відсутньому, ніби присутньому.	Whom men could not honour in presence, because they dwelt far off, they took the counterfeit of his visage from far, and made an express image of a king whom they honoured, to the end that by this their forwardness they might flatter him that was absent, as if he were present.

До посилення ж шанування і від незнавців заохочувала старанність художника,	Also the singular diligence of the artificer did help to set forward the ignorant to more superstition.

бо він, бажаючи, можливо, догодити володарю, подбав, щоб мистецтвом зробити подобу якнайкрасивішою;	For he, peradventure willing to please one in authority, forced all his skill to make the resemblance of the best fashion.

а народ, захоплений красою оздоби, того, якого невдовзі перед тим шанували, як людину, визнав тепер божеством.	And so the multitude, allured by the grace of the work, took him now for a god, which a little before was but honoured as a man.
21	21
І це було спокусою для людей, тому що вони, підкоряючись або нещастю, або тиранству, неповідомлене Ім’я прикладали до каменів і дерев.	And this was an occasion to deceive the world: for men, serving either calamity or tyranny, did ascribe unto stones and stocks the incommunicable name.

Потім не досить було для них помилятися у пізнанні про Бога, але вони, живучи у великій боротьбі неуцтва, таке велике зло називають світом.	Moreover this was not enough for them, that they erred in the knowledge of God; but whereas they lived in the great war of ignorance, those so great plagues called they peace.

Звершуючи або дітовбивчі жертви, або приховані таємниці, або запозичені від чужих звичаїв шалені бенкети,	For whilst they slew their children in sacrifices, or used secret ceremonies, or made revellings of strange rites;

вони не бережуть ні життя, ні чистих шлюбів, але один іншого або підступництвом убиває, або перелюбством кривдить.	they kept neither lives nor marriages any longer undefiled: but either one slew another traiterously or grieved him by adultery.
25	25
Усіма ж без різниці володіють кров і убивство, розкрадання і підступництво, розтління, віроломство, заколот, клятвопорушення, розкрадання майна,	So that there reigned in all men without exception, blood, manslaughter, theft, and dissimulation, corruption, unfaithfulness, tumults, perjury,

забуття подяки, осквернення душ, перетворення статей, безчиння шлюбів, перелюбство і розпуста.	disquieting of good men, forgetfulness of good turns, defiling of souls, changing of kind, disorder in marriages, adultery, and shameless uncleanness.

Служіння ідолам, які недостойні найменування, є початок і причина, і кінець усякого зла,	For the worshipping of idols not to be named is the beginning, the cause, and the end, of all evil.

бо вони або, забавляючись, шаленіють, або провіщають неправду, або живуть беззаконно, або швидко порушують клятву.	For either they are mad when they be merry, or prophesy lies, or live unjustly, or else lightly forswear themselves.

Надіючись на бездушних ідолів, вони не думають бути покараними за те, що несправедливо клянуться.	For insomuch as their trust is in idols which have no life, though they swear falsely, yet they look not to be hurt.
30	30
Але за те й інше прийде на них осудження, і за те, що нечестиво думали про Бога, звертаючись до ідолів, і за те, що неправдиво клялися, підступно зневажаючи святе.	Howbeit for both causes shall they be justly punished: both because they thought not well of God, giving heed unto idols, and also unjustly swore in deceit, despising holiness.

Бо не сила тих, якими вони клянуться, але суд над тими, що грішать, завжди йде за злочином неправедних.	For it is not the power of them by whom they swear: but it is the just vengeance of sinners, that punisheth always the offence of the ungodly.
