Але Ти, Бог наш, благий та істинний, довготерпеливий і управляєш усім милостиво.
|
But thou, our God, art gracious and true, long-suffering, and in mercy ordering all things.
|

|
Якщо ми і згрішаємо, ми — Твої, що визнаємо владу Твою; але ми не будемо грішити, знаючи, що ми визнані Твоїми.
|
For if we sin, we are thine, knowing thy power: but we will not sin, knowing that we are counted thine.
|
|

|
|
Знати Тебе є повна праведність, і визнавати владу Твою — корінь безсмертя.
|
For to know thee is perfect righteousness: yea, to know thy power is the root of immortality.
|

|
Не зваблює нас лукавий людський винахід, ні марний труд художників — зображення, розмальовані різними фарбами,
|
For neither did the mischievous invention of men deceive us, nor an image spotted with divers colours, the painter's fruitless labour;
|

|
|
погляд на які збуджує у безумних похотіння і жагу до бездушного вигляду мертвого образа.
|
the sight whereof enticeth fools to lust after it, and so they desire the form of a dead image, that hath no breath.
|

|
|
І ті, що роблять, і ті, хто має похіть, і хто шанує, є любителі зла, достойні таких надій.
|
Both they that make them, they that desire them, and they that worship them, are lovers of evil things, and are worthy to have such things to trust upon.
|

|
Гончар мне м’яку землю, старанно ліпить усякий сосуд на служіння нам; з однієї і тієї самої глини виробляє посуд, потрібний і для чистих діл і для нечистих — усе однаково; але яке для кожного з них вживання, суддя — той самий гончар.
|
For the potter, tempering soft earth, fashioneth every vessel with much labour for our service: yea, of the same clay he maketh both the vessels that serve for clean uses, and likewise also all such as serve to the contrary: but what is the use of either sort, the potter himself is the judge.

|
І суєтний трудівник з тієї самої глини ліпить суєтного бога, тоді як сам недавно народився із землі і скоро піде туди ж, звідки він узятий, і стягнеться з нього борг душі його.
|
And employing his labours lewdly, he maketh a vain god of the same clay, even he which a little before was made of earth himself, and within a little while after returneth to the same, out of the which he was taken, when his life which was lent him shall be demanded.

Але у нього турбота не про те, що він повинен багато трудитися, і не про те, що життя його коротке; але він змагається з художниками золотих і срібних виробів, і наслідує мідників, і ставить собі у славу те, що робить мерзоти.
|
Notwithstanding his care is, not that he shall have much labour, nor that his life is short: but striveth to excel goldsmiths and silversmiths, and endeavoureth to do like the workers in brass, and counteth it his glory to make counterfeit things.

|
Серце його — попіл, і надія його мізерніша за землю, і життя його нікчемніше за бруд;
|
His heart is ashes, his hope is more vile than earth, and his life of less value than clay:
|

|
бо він не пізнав Того, Хто сотворив його і вдунув у нього живу душу і вдихнув у нього дух життя.
|
forasmuch as he knew not his Maker, and him that inspired into him an active soul, and breathed in a living spirit.
|

|
Вони вважають життя наше забавою і житіє прибутковою торгівлею, тому що говорять, що слід же звідкілясь здобувати прибуток, хоч би і зі зла.
|
But they counted our life a pastime, and our time here a market for gain: for, say they, we must be getting every way, though it be by evil means.
|

Утім, такий більше за всіх знає, що він грішить, роблячи із земляної речовини тлінні сосуди і статуї.
|
For this man, that of earthly matter maketh brittle vessels and graven images, knoweth himself to offend above all others.
|

|
Найбільше ж нерозумні з усіх і бідніші розумом за самих немовлят — вороги народу Твого, які пригноблюють його,
|
And all the enemies of thy people, that hold them in subjection, are most foolish, and are more miserable than very babes.
|

|
тому що вони вважають богами усіх ідолів язичницьких, у яких нема ні очей для зору, ні ніздрів для втягування повітря, ні вух для слухання, ні пальців рук для дотику, і ноги яких нездатні для ходіння.
|
For they counted all the idols of the heathen to be gods: which neither have the use of eyes to see, nor noses to draw breath, nor ears to hear, nor fingers of hands to handle; and as for their feet, they are slow to go.

Хоча людина зробила їх, і запозичений дух утворив їх, але ніякий чоловік не може створити бога, як він сам.
|
For man made them, and he that borrowed his own spirit fashioned them: but no man can make a god like unto himself.
|

Будучи смертним, він робить нечестивими руками мертве, тому він довершеніший за божества свої, бо він жив, а ті — ніколи.
|
For being mortal, he worketh a dead thing with wicked hands: for he himself is better than the things which he worshippeth: whereas he lived once, but they never.

|
Притім вони шанують тварин найогидніших, які за безглуздістю порівняно гірші за усіх.
|
Yea, they worshipped those beasts also that are most hateful: for being compared together, some are worse than others.
|
|

|
Вони навіть некрасиві на вигляд, як інші тварини, щоб могли приваблювати до себе, але позбавлені і схвалення Божого і благословення Його.
|
Neither are they beautiful, so much as to be desired in respect of beasts: but they went without the praise of God and his blessing.
