| Ось імена синів Ізраїлевих, які ввійшли в Єгипет з Яковом [батьком їхнім], увійшли кожен з [усім] домом своїм: | These are the names of the sons of Israel that came into Egypt together with Jacob their father; they came in each with their whole family. |

| Рувим, Симеон, Левій та Іуда, | Ruben, Simeon, Levi, Judas, |

| Іссахар, Завулон і Веніамін, | Issachar, Zabulon, Benjamin, |

|
| Дан і Неффалим, Гад і Асир. | Dan and Nephthalim, Gad and Aser. |

|
| Усіх же душ, що народилися від стегон Якова, було сімдесят [п’ять], а Йосиф був уже в Єгипті. | But Joseph was in Egypt. And all the souls born of Jacob were seventy-five. |

|
| І помер Йосиф і всі брати його і весь рід їх; | And Joseph died, and all his brethren, and all that generation. |

|
| а сини Ізраїлеві розплодилися і розмножилися, і підросли і посилилися надзвичайно, і наповнилася ними земля та. | And the children of Israel increased and multiplied, and became numerous and grew exceedingly strong, and the land multiplied them. |
|

|
| І став над Єгиптом новий цар, який не знав Йосифа, | And there arose up another king over Egypt, who knew not Joseph. |

|
| і сказав народу своєму: ось, народ синів Ізраїлевих численний і сильніший за нас; | And he said to his nation, Behold, the race of the children of Israel is a great multitude, and is stronger than we: |

|
| перехитруємо ж його, щоб він не розмножувався; інакше, коли станеться війна, з’єднається і він з нашими ворогами, і озброїться проти нас, і вийде з землі [нашої]. | come then, let us deal craftily with them, lest at any time they be increased, and whensoever war shall happen to us, these also shall be added to our enemies, and having prevailed against us in war, they will depart out of the land. |

| І поставили над ним начальників робіт, щоб виснажували його важкими роботами. І він побудував фараону Пифом і Раамсес, міста для запасів, [і Он, інакше Іліополь]. | And he set over them task-masters, who should afflict them in their works; and they built strong cities for Pharao, both Pitho, and Ramesses, and On, which is Heliopolis. |

| Але чим більше виснажували його, тим більше він примножувався і тим більше зростав, так що [єгиптяни] побоювалися синів Ізраїлевих. | But as they humbled them, by so much they multiplied, and grew exceedingly strong; and the Egyptians greatly abhorred the children of Israel. |

| І тому єгиптяни з жорстокістю силували синів Ізраїлевих до робіт | And the Egyptians tyrannised over the children of Israel by force. |

|
| і робили життя їхнє гірким від важкої роботи над глиною і цеглою і від усякої роботи польової, від всякої роботи, до якої змушували їх з жорстокістю. | And they embittered their life by hard labours, in the clay and in brick-making, and all the works in the plains, according to all the works, wherein they caused them to serve with violence. |

| Цар Єгипетський повелів повитухам євреянок, з яких одній ім’я Шифра, а другій Фуа, | And the king of the Egyptians spoke to the midwives of the Hebrews; the name of the one was, Sepphora; and the name of the second, Phua. |

| і сказав [їм]: коли ви будете повивати у євреянок, то спостерігайте при пологах: якщо буде син, то умертвляйте його, а якщо дочка, то нехай живе. | And he said, When ye do the office of midwives to the Hebrew women, and they are about to be delivered, if it be a male, kill it; but if a female, save it. |

| Але повитухи боялися Бога і не робили так, як говорив їм цар Єгипетський, і залишали дітей живими. | But the midwives feared God, and did not as the king of Egypt appointed them; and they saved the male children alive. |

| Цар Єгипетський покликав повитух і сказав їм: для чого ви робите таку справу, що залишаєте дітей живими? | And the king of Egypt called the midwives, and said to them, Why is it that ye have done this thing, and saved the male children alive? |

| Повитухи сказали фараонові: єврейські жінки не такі, як єгипетські; вони здорові, тому що перш ніж прийде до них повитуха, вони вже народжують. | And the midwives said to Pharao, The Hebrew women are not as the women of Egypt, for they are delivered before the midwives go in to them. So they bore children. |

| За це Бог чинив добро повитухам, а народ розмножувався і дуже посилювався. | And God did well to the midwives, and the people multiplied, and grew very strong. |

| І оскільки повитухи боялися Бога, то Він утверджував доми їхні. | And as the midwives feared God, they established for themselves families. |
|

|
| Тоді фараон усьому народові своєму повелів, говорячи: всякого новонародженого [у євреїв] сина кидайте в ріку, а всяку дочку залишайте живою. | And Pharao charged all his people, saying, Whatever male child shall be born to the Hebrews, cast into the river; and every female, save it alive. |
