Chapter 27	Глава 27

Boast not of to-morrow; for thou knowest not what the next day shall bring forth.	Не хвалися завтрашнім днем, тому що не знаєш, що народить той день.

Let thy neighbour, and not thine own mouth, praise thee; a stranger, and not thine own lips.	Нехай хвалить тебе інший, а не вуста твої, — чужий, а не язик твій.

A stone is heavy, and sand cumbersome; but a fool's wrath is heavier than both.	Важкий камінь, вагомий і пісок; але гнів дурня важчий за них обох.

Wrath is merciless, and anger sharp: but envy can bear nothing.	Жорстокий гнів, неприборкна лють; але хто устоїть проти ревнощів?

Open reproofs are better than secret love.	Краще відкрите викривання, ніж прихована любов.

The wounds of a friend are more to be trusted than the spontaneous kisses of an enemy.	Щирі докори від того, хто любить, і неправдиві поцілунки ненависника.

A full soul scorns honeycombs; but to a hungry soul even bitter things appear sweet.	Сита душа зневажає і стільник, а голодній душі все гірке солодке.

As when a bird flies down from its own nest, so a man is brought into bondage whenever he estranges himself from his own place.	Як птах, який залишив гніздо своє, так людина, яка залишила місце своє.

The heart delights in ointments and wines and perfumes: but the soul is broken by calamities.	Масті і пахощі радують серце; так солодкий усякому друг сердечною порадою своєю.

Thine own friend, and thy father's friend, forsake not; and when thou art in distress go not into thy brother's house: better is a friend that is near than a brother living far off.	Не залишай друга твого і друга батька твого, і в дім брата твого не ходи в день нещастя твого: краще сусід поблизу, ніж брат далеко.

Son, be wise, that thy heart may rejoice; and remove thou from thyself reproachful words.	Будь мудрий, сину мій, і радуй серце моє; і я буду мати, що відповідати тому, хто лихословить мене.

A wise man, when evils are approaching, hides himself; but fools pass on, and will be punished.	Розсудливий бачить біду і ховається; а недосвідчені йдуть уперед і караються.

Take away the man's garment, (for a scorner has passed by) whoever lays waste another's goods.	Візьми у нього одяг його, тому що він ручився за чужого, і за стороннього візьми від нього заставу.

Whosoever shall bless a friend in the morning with a loud voice, shall seem to differ nothing from one who curses him.	Хто голосно хвалить друга свого з раннього ранку, того вважатимуть за лихомовця.

On a stormy day drops of rain drive a man out of his house; so also does a railing woman drive a man out of his own house.	Безперестанний капіж у дощовий день і сварлива дружина — рівні:

The north wind is sharp, but it is called by name propitious.	хто хоче приховати її, той хоче приховати вітер і масть у правій руці своїй, що дає знати про себе.

Iron sharpens iron; and a man sharpens his friend's countenance.	Як залізо гострить залізо, так людина гострить погляд друга свого.

He that plants a fig-tree shall eat the fruits of it: so he that waits on his own master shall be honoured.	Хто стереже смоковницю, той буде їсти плоди її; і хто береже господаря свого, той буде в шані.

As faces are not like other faces, so neither are the thoughts of men.	Як у воді лице — до лиця, так серце людини — до людини.

Hell and destruction are not filled; so also are the eyes of men insatiable.	Пекло й Аваддон — ненаситні; так ненаситні й очі людські. [Мерзота перед Господом той, хто зухвало піднімає очі, і нерозумні нестримані на язик.]

He that fixes his eye is an abomination to the Lord; and the uninstructed do not restrain their tongue.

Fire is the trial for silver and gold; and a man is tried by the mouth of them that praise him.	Що плавильня — для срібла, горно — для золота, те для людини вуста, які хвалять її. [Серце беззаконника шукає зла, серце ж праведне шукає знання.]

The heart of the transgressor seeks after mischiefs; but an upright heart seeks knowledge.

Though thou scourge a fool, disgracing him in the midst of the council, thou wilt still in no wise remove his folly from him.	Товчи нерозумного, як зерно у ступі, не відокремиться від нього глупота його.

Do thou thoroughly know the number of thy flock, and pay attention to thine herds.	Добре спостерігай за худобою твоєю, май піклування про стада;

For a man has not strength and power for ever; neither does he transmit it from generation to generation.	тому що багатство не навіки, та й влада хіба з роду в рід?

Take care of the herbage in the field, and thou shalt cut grass, and gather the mountain hay;	Проростає трава, і з’являється зелень, і збирають гірські трави.

that thou mayest have wool of sheep for clothing: pay attention to the land, that thou mayest have lambs.	Вівці — на одяг тобі, і козли — на купівлю поля.

My son, thou hast from me words very useful for thy life, and for the life of thy servants.	І достатньо козячого молока на їжу тобі, на їжу домашнім твоїм і на споживу служницям твоїм.
