Chapter 7	Глава 7

My son, keep my words, and hide with thee my commandments.	Сину мій! зберігай слова мої і заповіді мої приховай у себе. [Сину мій! шануй Господа, — і зміцнишся, і, крім Нього, не бійся нікого.]

My son, honour the Lord, and thou shalt be strong; and fear none but him:

keep my commandments, and thou shalt live; and keep my words as the pupils of thine eyes.	Зберігай заповіді мої і живи, і вчення моє, як зіниця очей твоїх.

And bind them on thy fingers, and write them on the table of thine heart.	Нав’яжи їх на персти твої, напиши їх на скрижалі серця твого.

Say that wisdom is thy sister, and gain prudence as an acquaintance for thyself;	Скажи мудрості: «ти сестра моя!» і розум назви рідним твоїм,

that she may keep thee from the strange and wicked woman, if she should assail thee with flattering words.	щоб вони охороняли тебе від дружини іншого, від чужої, яка пом’якшує слова свої.

For she looks from a window out of her house into the streets, at one whom she may see of the senseless ones, a young man void of understanding,	Ось, одного разу дивився я у вікна дому мого, крізь ґрати мої,

passing by the corner in the passages near her house,	і побачив серед недосвідчених, помітив між молодими людьми нерозумного юнака,

and speaking, in the dark of the evening,	який переходив площу біля рогу її і йшов по дорозі до дому її,

when there happens to be the stillness of night and of darkness:	у сутінках під вечір дня, у нічній темряві і в мороці.

and the woman meets him having the appearance of a harlot, that causes the hearts of young men to flutter.	І ось — назустріч йому жінка, в убранні блудниці, з підступним серцем,

And she is fickle, and debauched, and her feet abide not at home.	галаслива і невгамовна; ноги її не живуть у домі її:

For at one time she wanders without, and at another time she lies in wait in the streets, at every corner.	то на вулиці, то на площах, і біля кожного рогу чинить вона кови.

Then she caught him, and kissed him, and with an impudent face said to him,	Вона схопила його, цілувала його, і з безсоромним обличчям говорила йому:

I have a peace-offering; to-day I pay my vows:	«мирна жертва у мене: сьогодні я звершила обітниці мої;

therefore I came forth to meet thee, desiring thy face; and I have found thee.	тому і вийшла назустріч тобі, щоб відшукати тебе, і — знайшла тебе;

I have spread my bed with sheets, and I have covered it with double tapestry from Egypt.	килимами я вбрала постіль мою, різнобарвними тканинами єгипетськими;

I have sprinkled my couch with saffron, and my house with cinnamon.	спальню мою напахтила смирною, алое і корицею;
18	18
Come, and let us enjoy love until the morning; come, and let us embrace in love.	зайди, будемо упиватися ніжностями до ранку, насолодимося любов’ю,

For my husband is not at home, but is gone on a long journey,	тому що чоловіка немає вдома: він вирушив у далеку дорогу;
20	20
having taken in his hand a bundle of money: after many days he will return to his house.	гаманець срібла взяв із собою; прийде додому до дня повномісяччя».

So with much converse she prevailed on him to go astray, and with the snares of her lips she forced him from the right path.	Численними ласкавими словами вона звабила його, м’якістю вуст своїх оволоділа ним.

And he followed her, being gently led on, and that as an ox is led to the slaughter, and as a dog to bonds, or as a hart shot in the liver with an arrow:	Негайно він пішов за нею, як віл йде на забій, [і як пес — на ланцюг,] і як олень — на постріл,

and he hastens as a bird into a snare, not knowing that he is running for his life.	доки стріла не простромить печінки його; як пташка кидається в тенета, і не знає, що вони — на погибель її.

Now then, my son, hearken to me, and attend to the words of my mouth.	Отже, діти, слухайте мене і дослухайтеся до слів моїх.

Let not thine heart turn aside to her ways:	Нехай не ухиляється серце твоє на путі її, не блукай по стежках її,

for she has wounded and cast down many, and those whom she has slain are innumerable.	тому що багатьох повалила вона пораненими, і багато сильних убиті нею:

Her house is the way of hell, leading down to the chambers of death.	дім її — дорога у пекло, яка сходить у внутрішні оселі смерти.
