Chapter 6	Глава 6

My son, if thou become surety for thy friend, thou shalt deliver thine hand to an enemy.	Сину мій! якщо ти поручився за ближнього твого і дав руку твою за іншого, —

For a man's own lips become a strong snare to him, and he is caught with the lips of his own mouth.	ти обплутав себе словами вуст твоїх, упійманий словами вуст твоїх.

My son, do what I command thee, and deliver thyself; for on thy friend's account thou art come into the power of evil men: faint not, but stir up even thy friend for whom thou art become surety.	Зроби ж, сину мій, ось що, і визволи себе, тому що ти потрапив до рук ближнього твого: піди, упади до ніг і благай ближнього твого;

Give not sleep to thine eyes, nor slumber with thine eyelids;	не давай сну очам твоїм і дрімання віям твоїм;

that thou mayest deliver thyself as a doe out of the toils, and as a bird out of a snare.	рятуйся, як сарна з руки і як птах з руки птахолова.

Go to the ant, O sluggard; and see, and emulate his ways, and become wiser than he.	Піди до мурахи, лінивцю, подивися на дії її, і будь мудрим.

For whereas he has no husbandry, nor any one to compel him, and is under no master,	Нема у неї ні начальника, ні приставника, ні володаря;

he prepares food for himself in the summer, and lays by abundant store in harvest.	але вона заготовляє влітку хліб свій, збирає під час жнив їжу свою. [Або піди до бджоли і пізнай, яка вона працьовита, яку поважну роботу вона виконує; її труди вживають для здоров’я і царі і простолюдини; улюблена ж вона всіма і славна; хоч силою вона слабка, але мудрістю вшанована.]

Or go to the bee, and learn how diligent she is, and how earnestly she is engaged in her work;

whose labours kings and private men use for health, and she is desired and respected by all:

though weak in body, she is advanced by honouring wisdom.

How long wilt thou lie, O sluggard? and when wilt thou awake out of sleep?	Доки ти, лінивцю, будеш спати? коли ти встанеш від сну твого?

Thou sleepest a little, and thou restest a little, and thou slumberest a short time, and thou foldest thine arms over thy breast a little.	Трохи поспиш, трохи подрімаєш, трохи, склавши руки, полежиш:

Then poverty comes upon thee as an evil traveller, and want as a swift courier:	і прийде, як перехожий, бідність твоя, і нестаток твій, як розбійник. [Якщо ж будеш не лінивим, то, як джерело, прийдуть жнива твої; убогість же далеко втече від тебе.]

but if thou be diligent, thine harvest shall arrive as a fountain, and poverty shall flee away as a bad courier.

A foolish man and a transgressor goes in ways that are not good.	Людина лукава, людина нечестива ходить з облудними вустами,

And the same winks with the eye, and makes a sign with his foot, and teaches with the beckonings of his fingers.	моргає очима своїми, говорить ногами своїми, дає знаки пальцями своїми;

His perverse heart devises evils: at all times such a one causes troubles to a city.	підступність у серці її: вона замишляє зло повсякчас, сіє розбрат.
15	15
Therefore his destruction shall come suddenly; overthrow and irretrievable ruin.	Зате несподівано прийде погибель її, раптом буде розбита — без зцілення.
16	16
For he rejoices in all things which God hates, and he is ruined by reason of impurity of soul.	Ось шість, що ненавидить Господь, навіть сім, що мерзота для душі Його:
17	17
The eye of the haughty, a tongue unjust, hands shedding the blood of the just;	очі горді, мова неправдива і руки, що проливають кров невинну,
18	18
and a heart devising evil thoughts, and feet hastening to do evil,—are hateful to God.	серце, яке кує злі задуми, ноги, які швидко біжать до лиходійства,

An unjust witness kindles falsehoods, and brings on quarrels between brethren.	лжесвідок, який наговорює неправду і сіє розбрат між братами.

My son, keep the laws of thy father, and reject not the ordinances of thy mother:	Сину мій! зберігай заповідь батька твого і не відкидай наставляння матері твоєї;
21	21
but bind them upon thy soul continually, and hang them as a chain about thy neck.	нав’яжи їх назавжди на серце твоє, обв’яжи ними шию твою.
22	22
Whensoever thou walkest, lead this along and let it be with thee; and when thou sleepest let it keep thee; that it may talk with thee when thou wakest.	Коли ти підеш, вони будуть керувати тобою; коли ляжеш спати, будуть охороняти тебе; коли пробудишся, будуть розмовляти з тобою:

For the commandment of the law is a lamp and a light; a way of life; reproof also and correction:	бо заповідь є світильник, і наставляння — світло, і розсудливі повчання — шлях до життя,

to keep thee continually from a married woman, and from the calumny of a strange tongue.	щоб оберігати тебе від негідної жінки, від улесливої мови чужої.

Let not the desire of beauty overcome thee, neither be thou caught by thine eyes, neither be captivated with her eyelids.	Не пожадай краси її в серці твоєму, [нехай не уловленим будеш очима твоїми,] і нехай не захопить вона тебе віями своїми;

For the value of a harlot is as much as of one loaf; and a woman hunts for the precious souls of men.	тому що через жінку блудну убожіють до шматка хліба, а заміжня жінка уловлює дорогу душу.

Shall any one bind fire in his bosom, and not burn his garments?	Чи може хто взяти собі вогонь у пазуху, щоб не прогорів одяг його?

or will any one walk on coals of fire, and not burn his feet?	Чи може хто ходити по вугіллю, яке горить, щоб не обпекти ніг своїх?

So is he that goes in to a married woman; he shall not be held guiltless, neither any one that touches her.	Те саме буває і з тим, хто входить до дружини ближнього свого: хто доторкнеться до неї, не залишиться без провини.

It is not to be wondered at if one should be taken stealing, for he steals that when hungry he may satisfy his soul:	Не дарують злодієві, якщо він краде, щоб наситити душу свою, коли він голодний;

but if he should be taken, he shall repay sevenfold, and shall deliver himself by giving all his goods.	але, будучи упійманим, він заплатить всемеро, віддасть усе майно дому свого.

But the adulterer through want of sense procures destruction to his soul.	Хто ж перелюбствує з жінкою, у того немає розуму; той губить душу свою, хто чинить це:

He endures both pain and disgrace, and his reproach shall never be wiped off.	побиття і ганьбу знайде він, і нечестя його не згладиться,

For the soul of her husband is full of jealousy: he will not spare in the day of vengeance.	тому що ревнощі — лють чоловіка, і не пощадить він у день помсти,

He will not forego his enmity for any ransom: neither will he be reconciled for many gifts.	не прийме ніякого викупу і не задовольниться, скільки б ти не примножував дари.
