| У п’ятнадцятий же рік правління Тиверія-кесаря, коли Понтійський Пилат правив Юдеєю, Ірод був четвертовладником у Галилеї, Филип, брат його, був четвертовладником в Ітуреї і Трахонітському краї, а Лисаній був четвертовладником в Авилинеї, | Now in the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, Pontius Pilate being governor of Judea, and Herod being tetrarch of Galilee, and his brother Philip tetrarch of the region of Ituraea and Trachonitis, and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene, |

| за первосвящеників Анни і Каяфи, було слово Боже до Іоана, сина Захарії, в пустелі. | in the high priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came unto John the son of Zechariah in the wilderness. |

| І він проходив по всій околиці Йорданській, проповідуючи хрещення покаяння для прощення гріхів, | And he came into all the region round about the Jordan, preaching the baptism of repentance unto remission of sins; |

|
| як написано в книзі слів Ісаї-пророка, який говорить: глас вопіющого в пустелі: приготуйте путь Господній, прямими зробіть стезі Йому. | as it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Make ye ready the way of the Lord, Make his paths straight. |

| Кожна долина нехай наповниться, і всяка гора і пагорб зрівняються, і хай стане криве прямим, і вибоїсті дороги — рівними. | Every valley shall be filled, And every mountain and hill shall be brought low; And the crooked shall become straight, And the rough ways smooth; |

| І побачить всяка плоть спасіння Боже. | And all flesh shall see the salvation of God. |
|

|
| Іоан говорив народові, що приходив хреститися від нього: поріддя єхиднове! Хто навчив вас тікати від грядущого гніву? | He said therefore to the multitudes that went out to be baptized of him, Ye offspring of vipers, who warned you to flee from the wrath to come? |
|

|
| Створіть же плоди, достойні покаяння, і не думайте говорити в собі: отця маємо Авраама. Кажу бо вам, що Бог з каміння цього може створити дітей Авраамові. | Bring forth therefore fruits worthy of repentance, and begin not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to our father: for I say unto you, that God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham. |

| Вже й сокира при корені дерева лежить: всяке дерево, що не приносить доброго плоду, зрубується і вкидається у вогонь. | And even now the axe also lieth at the root of the trees: every tree therefore that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire. |

| І запитували його люди, кажучи: що ж нам робити? | And the multitudes asked him, saying, What then shall we do? |

| Відповідаючи, він сказав їм: хто має дві одежини, хай дасть тому, хто не має, і хто має їжу, хай зробить так само. | And he answereth and saith unto them, He that hath two coats, let him impart to him that hath none; and he that hath food, let him do likewise. |
|

|
| Прийшли і митарі хреститися від нього і сказали йому: учителю, що нам робити? | And there came also publicans to be baptized, and they said unto him, Teacher, what shall we do? |
|

|
| Він відповів їм: нічого не вимагайте більше того, що призначено вам. | And he said unto them, Extort no more than that which is appointed you. |
|

|
| Питали його також і воїни: а що нам робити? І сказав їм: нікого не кривдіть, не обмовляйте і задовольняйтеся платнею вашою. | And soldiers also asked him, saying, And we, what shall we do? And he said unto them, Extort from no man by violence, neither accuse anyone wrongfully; and be content with your wages. |

| Коли ж народ чекав і всі роздумували в серцях своїх про Іоана, чи не Христос він, — | And as the people were in expectation, and all men reasoned in their hearts concerning John, whether haply he were the Christ; |

| Іоан усім відповідав: я хрещу вас водою: але гряде Сильніший за мене, Якому я недостойний розв’язати ремінь взуття Його; Він хреститиме вас Духом Святим і вогнем. | John answered, saying unto them all, I indeed baptize you with water; but there cometh he that is mightier than I, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to unloose: he shall baptize you in the Holy Spirit and in fire: |

| Лопата в руці Його, і Він очистить тік Свій і збере пшеницю в житницю Свою, а полову спалить вогнем невгасимим. | whose fan is in his hand, and he will thoroughly cleanse his threshing floor, and will gather the wheat into his garner; but the chaff he will burn up with unquenchable fire. |

| І багато іншого, втішаючи, благовістив Він людям. | With many other exhortations therefore preached he good tidings unto the people; |

| Ірод же, четвертовладник, якому Іоан докоряв за Іродіаду, жінку брата його, і за все, що зробив Ірод лихого, | but Herod the tetrarch, being reproved by him for Herodias his brother’s wife, and for all the evil things which Herod had done, |
|

|
| додав до всього іншого і те, що замкнув Іоана у в’язниці. | added this also to them all, that he shut up John in the prison. |
|

|
| І сталося, коли хрестився весь народ, і Ісус, охрестившись, молився, розкрилося небо, | Now it came to pass, when all the people were baptized, that, Jesus also having been baptized, and praying, the heaven was opened, |
|

|
| і Дух Святий зійшов на Нього в тілесному вигляді, як голуб; і був Голос з небес, Який говорив: Ти є Син Мій Улюблений, у Тобі Моє благовоління! | and the Holy Spirit descended in a bodily form, as a dove, upon him, and a voice came out of heaven, saying, Thou art my beloved Son; in thee I am well pleased. |

| Ісус, починаючи Своє служіння, був років тридцяти, і був, як думали, син Йосифів, Іліїв, | And Jesus himself, when he began to teach, was about thirty years of age, being (as was supposed) the son of Joseph, the son of Heli, |
