| Оскільки багато хто почав складати оповіді про добре відомі нам речі, | Forasmuch as many have taken in hand to draw up a narrative concerning those matters which have been fulfilled among us, |

|
| як передали нам ті, що від самого початку були очевидцями і служителями Слова*, | even as they delivered them unto us, who from the beginning were eyewitnesses and ministers of the word, |
|

|
3
|
| то спало на думку й мені, старанно дослідивши все від початку, по порядку описати тобі, високодостойний Феофиле, | it seemed good to me also, having traced the course of all things accurately from the first, to write unto thee in order, most excellent Theophilus; |
|

|
4
|
| щоб ти пізнав тверду основу того вчення, в якому був наставлений. | that thou mightest know the certainty concerning the things wherein thou wast instructed. |
|

|
| У дні Ірода, царя Юдейського, був священик на ім’я Захарія, з денної черги Авиєвої, і жінка його з дочок Ааронових, а ім’я її — Єлисавета. | There was in the days of Herod, the king of Judea, a certain priest named Zechariah, of the course of Abijah: and his wife was of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elizabeth. |

| Обоє вони були праведні перед Богом, виконуючи всі заповіді і настанови Господні бездоганно. | And they were both righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless. |
|

|
| У них не було дітей, бо Єлисавета була неплідна, і обоє були вже похилого віку. | And they had no child, because that Elizabeth was barren, and they both were now well stricken in years. |
|

|
| Одного разу, коли він за чином своєї черги служив перед Богом, | Now it came to pass, while he executed the priest’s office before God in the order of his course, |
|

|
9
|
| за звичаєм священства, йому випало покадити, ввійшовши до храму Господнього, | according to the custom of the priest’s office, his lot was to enter into the temple of the Lord and burn incense. |
|

|
10
|
| а вся безліч народу молилася зовні під час кадіння. | And the whole multitude of the people were praying without at the hour of incense. |
|

|
11
|
| Тоді з’явився йому ангел Господній, стоячи праворуч жертовника кадильного. | And there appeared unto him an angel of the Lord standing on the right side of the altar of incense. |
|

|
| Збентежився Захарія, побачивши його, і страх напав на нього. | And Zechariah was troubled when he saw him, and fear fell upon him. |
|

|

|
| Ангел же сказав йому: не бійся, Захаріє, бо почута молитва твоя, і жінка твоя Єлисавета народить тобі сина, і наречеш ім’я йому Іоан; | But the angel said unto him, Fear not, Zechariah: because thy supplication is heard, and thy wife Elizabeth shall bear thee a son, and thou shalt call his name John. |

| і буде тобі радість і втіха, і багато хто народженню його зрадіє, | And thou shalt have joy and gladness; and many shall rejoice at his birth. |
|

|
| бо він буде великий перед Господом; ні вина, ні хмільного напою не питиме, і Духа Святого сповниться ще від утроби матері своєї. | For he shall be great in the sight of the Lord, and he shall drink no wine nor strong drink; and he shall be filled with the Holy Spirit, even from his mother’s womb. |

| І багатьох з синів Ізраїлевих наверне до Господа Бога їхнього. | And many of the children of Israel shall he turn unto the Lord their God. |
|

|
| І йтиме перед Ним з духом і силою Іллі, щоб навернути серця батьків до дітей, і непокірних — до мудрості праведників, щоб приготувати Господеві народ звершений. | And he shall go before his face in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to walk in the wisdom of the just; to make ready for the Lord a people prepared for him. |

| І сказав Захарія ангелові: з чого я пізнаю це? Бо я старий, і жінка моя постарілася у днях своїх. | And Zechariah said unto the angel, Whereby shall I know this? for I am an old man, and my wife well stricken in years. |
|

|
| Ангел сказав йому у відповідь: я Гавриїл, що стою перед Богом, і посланий говорити з тобою і благовістити тобі про це. | And the angel answered and said unto him, I am Gabriel, that stand in the presence of God; and I was sent to speak unto thee, and to bring thee these good tidings. |
|

| І ось ти будеш мовчати і не матимеш можливости говорити до того дня, коли збудеться це, за те, що ти не повірив словам моїм, котрі збудуться свого часу. | And behold, thou shalt be silent and not able to speak, until the day that these things shall come to pass, because thou believedst not my words, which shall be fulfilled in their season. |

| Люди чекали на Захарію і дивувалися, що він забарився в храмі. | And the people were waiting for Zechariah, and they marveled while he tarried in the temple. |
|

|
| Він же, вийшовши, не міг говорити до них; і вони зрозуміли, що він бачив видіння в храмі; і він говорив з ними знаками і залишався німим. | And when he came out, he could not speak unto them: and they perceived that he had seen a vision in the temple: and he continued making signs unto them, and remained dumb. |

| А коли закінчилися дні служіння його, повернувся до свого дому. | And it came to pass, when the days of his ministration were fulfilled, he departed unto his house. |
|

|
| Після тих днів зачала Єлисавета, жінка його, і таїлася п’ять місяців, кажучи: | And after these days Elizabeth his wife conceived; and she hid herself five months, saying, |

|
| так сотворив мені Господь у ті дні, коли зглянувся на мене, щоб зняти з мене ганьбу перед людьми. | Thus hath the Lord done unto me in the days wherein he looked upon me, to take away my reproach among men. |
|

|
| Шостого ж місяця був посланий від Бога ангел Гавриїл у галилейське місто, яке називається Назарет, | Now in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent by God unto a city of Galilee, named Nazareth, |
|

|
| до Діви, зарученої з мужем на ім’я Йосиф, з дому Давидового; ім’я ж Діви — Марія. | to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin’s name was Mary. |
|

|
| Ангел, увійшовши до Неї, сказав: радуйся, Благодатна! Господь з Тобою, благословенна Ти в жонах. | And the angel came in unto her, and said, Hail, thou that art highly favored, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women. |
|

|
| Вона ж, побачивши його, стривожилася від слів його і міркувала, що б то значило це привітання. | And when she saw him, she was greatly troubled at his saying, and cast in her mind what manner of salutation this might be. |
|

|
30
|
| І сказав Їй ангел: не бійся, Маріє! Бо Ти знайшла благодать у Бога. | And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favor with God. |
|

|

|
| І ось зачнеш в утробі і народиш Сина, і наречеш ім’я Йому Ісус. | And behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS. |
|

|
| Він буде Великий і Сином Всевишнього наречеться, і дасть Йому Господь Бог престіл Давида, отця Його. | He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Most High: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David: |
|

|
| І царюватиме у домі Якова повік, і царству Його не буде кінця. | and he shall reign over the house of Jacob forever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end. |
|

|

|
| Марія ж сказала ангелу: як же станеться це, коли Я мужа не знаю? | And Mary said unto the angel, How shall this be, seeing I know not a man? |
|
35
|
35
|
| Ангел сказав Їй у відповідь: Дух Святий зійде на Тебе, і сила Всевишнього осінить Тебе. Тому і народжуване Святе наречеться Сином Божим. | And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Spirit shall come upon thee, and the power of the Most High shall overshadow thee: wherefore also the holy thing which is begotten shall be called the Son of God. |

| Ось і Єлисавета, родичка Твоя, і вона зачала сина в старості своїй, і це вже шостий місяць їй, хоча називають її неплідною, | And behold, Elizabeth thy kinswoman, she also hath conceived a son in her old age; and this is the sixth month with her that was called barren. |
|

|
| бо не буває безсилим у Бога ніяке слово. | For nothing shall be impossible with God. |
|

|

|
| Тоді Марія сказала: Я — раба Господня. Нехай буде Мені за словом твоїм. І відійшов від Неї ангел. | And Mary said, Behold, the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word. And the angel departed from her. |
|

|
| Уставши ж, Марія у дні ці поспіхом пішла у передгір’я, в місто Іудине, | And Mary arose in these days and went into the hill country with haste, into a city of Judah; |
|

|
40
|
| і увійшла в дім Захарії, і привітала Єлисавету. | and entered into the house of Zechariah and saluted Elizabeth. |
|

|
| Коли ж почула Єлисавета привітання Маріїне, заграло дитя в утробі її, і сповнилася Духа Святого Єлисавета. | And it came to pass, when Elizabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb; and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit; |
|

|
| І вигукнула гучним голосом і сказала: благословенна Ти в жонах, і благословенний плід утроби Твоєї! | and she spake out with a loud voice, and said, Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb. |
|

|
43
|
| І звідки це мені, що Мати Господа мого прийшла до мене? | And whence is this to me, that the mother of my Lord should come unto me? |
|
44
|
44
|
| Бо, коли голос вітання Твого дійшов до вух моїх, заграло дитя радісно в утробі моїй. | For behold, when the voice of thy salutation came into mine ears, the babe leaped in my womb for joy. |
|
45
|
45
|
| Блаженна ж Та, Яка увірувала, бо збудеться сказане Їй від Господа. | And blessed is she that believed; for there shall be a fulfillment of the things which have been spoken to her from the Lord. |
|

|
46
|
| І сказала Марія: величає душа Моя Господа, | And Mary said, My soul doth magnify the Lord, |
|
47
|
47
|
| і зрадів дух Мій у Бозі, Спасі Моїм, | And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Savior. |
|
48
|
48
|
| бо зглянувся на смирення раби Своєї, ось-бо віднині ублажатимуть Мене всі роди. | For he hath looked upon the low estate of his handmaid: For behold, from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed. |
|

|
49
|
| Бо вчинив Мені велич Всемогутній, і святе ім’я Його. | For he that is mighty hath done to me great things; And holy is his name. |
|
50
|
50
|
| І милість Його з роду в рід на тих, що бояться Його. | And his mercy is unto generations of generations On them that fear him. |
|
51
|
51
|
| Явив могутність руки Своєї, розсіяв гордовитих у помислах сердець їхніх; | He hath shown strength with his arm; He hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their heart. |
|
52
|
52
|
| скинув сильних з престолів і підніс смиренних; | He hath put down princes from their thrones, And hath exalted them of low degree. |
|
53
|
53
|
| голодних сповнив благами, а тих, що багатіють, відпустив ні з чим. | The hungry he hath filled with good things; And the rich he hath sent empty away. |
|

|
54
|
| Прийняв Ізраїля, отрока Свого, спом’янувши милість, | He hath given help to Israel his servant, That he might remember mercy |
|
55
|
55
|
| як говорив отцям нашим, Авраамові і нащадкам його до віку. | (As he spake unto our fathers) Toward Abraham and his seed forever. |
|
56
|
56
|
| Пробула ж Марія з нею близько трьох місяців і повернулася в дім Свій. | And Mary abode with her about three months, and returned unto her house. |
|
57
|
57
|
| Єлисаветі ж настав час родити, і вона народила сина. | Now Elizabeth’s time was fulfilled that she should be delivered; and she brought forth a son. |
|
58
|
58
|
| І почули сусіди й родичі її, що звеличив її Господь милістю Своєю, і радувалися з нею. | And her neighbors and her kinsfolk heard that the Lord had magnified his mercy toward her; and they rejoiced with her. |
|
59
|
59
|
| І восьмого дня прийшли обрізати немовля, і хотіли назвати його ім’ям батька його — Захарією. | And it came to pass on the eighth day, that they came to circumcise the child; and they would have called him Zechariah, after the name of his father. |
|
60
|
60
|
| На це мати його сказала: ні, хай буде названий Іоаном. | And his mother answered and said, Not so; but he shall be called John. |
|
61
|
61
|
| І сказали їй: адже нікого нема в роді твоїм, хто звався б ім’ям тим. | And they said unto her, There is none among thy kindred that is called by this name. |
|
62
|
62
|
| І питали знаками в батька його, як би він хотів назвати його. | And they made signs to his father, what he would have him called. |
|
63
|
63
|
| Попросивши дощечку, написав слова: Іоан буде ім’я йому. І дивувались усі. | And he asked for a writing tablet, and wrote, saying, His name is John. And they marveled all. |
|
64
|
64
|
| І відразу відкрилися уста його і язик його, і він почав говорити, благословляючи Бога. | And his mouth was opened immediately, and his tongue loosed, and he spake, blessing God. |
|
65
|
65
|
| І був страх у всіх навколишніх жителів; і в усій країні Юдейській розповідалося про все це. | And fear came on all that dwelt round about them: and all these sayings were noised abroad throughout all the hill country of Judea. |
|
66
|
66
|
| Усі, хто чув, поклали це в серці своїм і говорили: ким буде дитя це? І рука Господня була з ним. | And all that heard them laid them up in their heart, saying, What then shall this child be? And the hand of the Lord was with him. |
|
67
|
67
|
| І Захарія, батько його, сповнився Духа Святого і пророкував, кажучи: | And his father Zechariah was filled with the Holy Spirit, and prophesied, saying, |
|
68
|
68
|
| благословен Господь Бог Ізраїлів, що відвідав народ Свій і створив визволення йому. | Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel; For he hath visited and wrought redemption for his people, |
|
69
|
69
|
| І підніс ріг спасіння нам у домі Давида, отрока Свого, | And hath raised up a horn of salvation for us In the house of his servant David |
|
70
|
70
|
| як провістив устами святих пророків Своїх, що були від віку, | (As he spake by the mouth of his holy prophets that have been from of old), |
|
71
|
71
|
| що спасе нас від ворогів наших і від руки всіх, хто ненавидить нас; | Salvation from our enemies, and from the hand of all that hate us; |
|
72
|
72
|
| сотворить милість батькам нашим і спом’яне святий завіт Свій — | To show mercy toward our fathers, And to remember his holy covenant; |
|

|
73
|
| дати нам клятву, якою клявся Він Авраамові, отцю нашому, | The oath which he sware unto Abraham our father, To grant unto us |
|
74
|
74
|
| щоб ми, визволившись від рук ворогів наших, | that we being delivered out of the hand of our enemies Should serve him without fear, |
|
75
|
75
|
| безбоязно служили Йому в святості й праведності перед Ним всі дні життя нашого. | In holiness and righteousness before him all the days of our life. |
|
76
|
76
|
| І ти, дитя, пророком Всевишнього наречешся, бо йтимеш перед лицем Господа, щоб приготувати путі Йому. | And thou, child, shalt be called the prophet of the Most High: For thou shalt go before the face of the Lord to make ready his ways; |
|
77
|
77
|
| Дати зрозуміти спасіння людям Його у відпущенні гріхів їхніх, | To give knowledge of salvation unto his people In the remission of their sins, |
|
78
|
78
|
| з ласкавого милосердя Бога нашого, яким відвідав нас Схід* з неба, | Because of the tender mercy of our God, Whereby the dayspring from on high hath visited us, |

|
79
|
| просвітити тих, що у темряві й тіні смертній сидять, спрямувати ноги наші на шлях миру. | To shine upon them that sit in darkness and the shadow of death; To guide our feet into the way of peace. |
|
80

80
|
| Дитя ж зростало і міцніло духом, і було у пустелях до дня явлення свого Ізраїлеві. | And the child grew, and waxed strong in spirit, and was in the deserts till the day of his showing unto Israel. |
