| Is not the life of man upon earth a state of trial? and his existence as that of a hireling by the day? | Чи не визначено людині час на землі, і дні її чи не такі самі, як і дні найманця? |

| Or as a servant that fears his master, and one who has grasped a shadow? or as a hireling waiting for his pay? | Як раб жадає тіні, і як найманець чекає закінчення роботи своєї, |

| So have I also endured months of vanity, and nights of pain have been appointed me. | так я одержав у наділ місяці суєтні, і ночі гіркі відраховані мені. |

| Whenever I lie down, I say, When will it be day? and whenever I rise up, again I say when will it be evening? and I am full of pains from evening to morning. | Коли лягаю, то говорю: «колись встану?», а вечір триває, і я перевертаюся досита до самого світанку. |

| And my body is covered with loathsome worms; and I waste away, scraping off clods of dust from my eruption. | Тіло моє одягнене червою і запорошеними струпами; шкіра моя тріскається і гноїться. |

| And my life is lighter than a word, and has perished in vain hope. | Дні мої біжать скоріше за човника і закінчуються без надії. |

| Remember then that my life is breath, and mine eye shall not yet again see good. | Згадай, що життя моє подув, що око моє не повернеться, щоб бачити добре. |

| The eye of him that sees me shall not see me again: thine eyes are upon me, and I am no more. | Не побачить мене око того, хто бачив мене; очі Твої на мене, — і немає мене. |

| I am as a cloud that is cleared away from the sky: for if a man go down to the grave, he shall not come up again: | Рідіє хмара й зникає; так той, хто зійшов у пекло, не вийде, |

| and he shall surely not return to his own house, neither shall his place know him any more. | не повернеться більше у дім свій, і місце його вже не буде знати його. |

| Then neither will I refrain my mouth: I will speak being in distress; being in anguish I will disclose the bitterness of my soul. | Не буду ж я стримувати вуст моїх; буду говорити у пригніченні духу мого; буду скаржитися в печалі душі моєї. |

| Am I a sea, or a serpent, that thou hast set a watch over me? | Хіба я море або морське чудовисько, що Ти поставив наді мною сторожу? |

| I said that my bed should comfort me, and I would privately counsel with myself on my couch. | Коли подумаю: втішить мене постіль моя, забере горе моє ложе моє, |

| Thou scarest me with dreams, and dost terrify me with visions. | ти страшиш мене снами і видіннями лякаєш мене; |

| Thou wilt separate life from my spirit; and yet keep my bones from death. | і душа моя бажає краще припинення дихання, краще смерти, ніж збереження кісток моїх. |

| For I shall not live for ever, that I should patiently endure: depart from me, for my life is vain. | Огидним стало для мене життя. Не вічно жити мені. Відступи від мене, тому що дні мої суєта. |

| For what is man, that thou hast magnified him? or that thou givest heed to him? | Що таке людина, що Ти так цінуєш її і звертаєш на неї увагу Твою, |

| Wilt thou visit him till the morning, and judge him till the time of rest? | відвідуєш її кожного ранку, кожну мить випробовуєш її? |

| How long dost thou not let me alone, nor let me go, until I shall swallow down my spittle? | Доки ж Ти не залишиш, доки не відійдеш від мене, доки не даси мені проковтнути слину мою? |

| If I have sinned, what shall I be able to do, O thou that understandest the mind of men? why hast thou made me as thine accuser, and why am I a burden to thee? | Якщо я згрішив, то що я зроблю Тобі, страж людей! Навіщо Ти поставив мене супротивником Собі, так що я став самому собі за тягар? |

| Why hast thou not forgotten my iniquity, and purged my sin? but now I shall depart to the earth; and in the morning, I am no more. | І чому б не простити мені гріха і не зняти з мене беззаконня мого? бо, ось, я ляжу в порох; завтра шукатимеш мене, і мене немає. |
