| I know of a truth that it is so: for how shall a mortal man be just before the Lord? | правда! знаю, що так; але як виправдається людина перед Богом? |

| For if he would enter into judgment with him, God would not hearken to him, so that he should answer to one of his charges of a thousand. | Якщо захоче вступити в суперечку з Ним, то не відповість Йому на жодне з тисячі. |
|

|
| For he is wise in mind, and mighty, and great: who has hardened himself against him and endured? | Премудрий серцем і могутній силою; хто повставав проти Нього і залишався у спокої? |
|

|
| Who wears out the mountains, and men know it not: who overturns them in anger. | Він пересуває гори, і не впізнають їх: Він перетворює їх у гніві Своєму; |

|
| Who shakes the earth under heaven from its foundations, and its pillars totter. | зрушує землю з місця її, і стовпи її тремтять; |
|

|
| Who commands the sun, and it rises not; and he seals up the stars. | скаже сонцю, — і не зійде, і на зірки накладає печатку. |

|
| Who alone has stretched out the heavens, and walks on the sea as on firm ground. | Він один розпростирає небеса і ходить по висотах моря; |

|
| Who makes Pleias, and Hesperus, and Arcturus, and the chambers of the south. | створив Ас, Кесиль і Хима* і тайники півдня; |
|

|
| Who does great and unsearchable things; glorious also and excellent things, innumerable. | робить велике, недослідиме і дивовижне без міри! |

|
| If ever he should go beyond me, I shall not see him: if he should pass by me, neither thus have I known it. | Ось, Він пройде переді мною, і не побачу Його; пронесеться, і не помічу Його. |

|
| If he would take away, who shall turn him back? or who shall say to him, What hast thou done? | Візьме, і хто заборонить Йому? хто скаже Йому: що Ти робиш? |

|
| For if he has turned away his anger, the whales under heaven have stooped under him. | Бог не відверне гніву Свого; перед Ним упадуть поборники гордині. |
|

|
| Oh then that he would hearken to me, or judge my cause. | Тим більше чи можу я відповідати Йому і вишукувати собі слова перед Ним? |
|

|

|
| For though I be righteous, he will not hearken to me: I will intreat his judgment. | Хоч би я і правий був, але не буду відповідати, а буду благати Суддю мого. |
|

|
| And if I should call and he should not hearken, I cannot believe that he has listened to my voice. | Якби я воззвав, і Він відповів мені, — я не повірив би, що голос мій почув Той, |

|
| Let him not crush me with a dark storm: but he has made my bruises many without cause. | Хто у вихорі вражає мене і примножує невинно мої рани, |
|

|
| For he suffers me not to take breath, but he has filled me with bitterness. | не дає мені перевести дух, але пересичує мене гіркотою. |
|

|
| For indeed he is strong in power: who then shall resist his judgment? | Якщо діяти силою, то Він могутній; якщо судом, хто зведе мене з Ним? |
|

|
| For though I should seem righteous, my mouth will be profane: and though I should seem blameless, I shall be proved perverse. | Якщо я буду виправдовуватися, то мої ж вуста звинуватять мене; якщо я невинний, то Він визнає мене винним. |
|

|
| For even if I have sinned, I know it not in my soul: but my life is taken away. | Невинний я; не хочу знати душі моєї, зневажаю життя моє. |
|

|
| Wherefore I said, Wrath slays the great and mighty man. | Все одно; тому я сказав, що Він губить і непорочного і винного. |
|

|
| For the worthless die, but the righteous are laughed to scorn. | Якщо цього вражає Він бичем раптово, то над катуванням невинних сміється. |

|
| For they are delivered into the hands of the unrighteous man: he covers the faces of the judges of the earth: but if it be not he, who is it? | Земля віддана в руки нечестивих; обличчя суддів її Він закриває. Якщо не Він, то хто ж? |

|
| But my life is swifter than a post: my days have fled away, and they knew it not. | Дні мої швидші за гінця, — біжать, не бачать добра, |

|
| Or again, is there a trace of their path left by ships? or is there one of the flying eagle as it seeks its prey? | несуться, як легкі човни, як орел рине на здобичу. |

|
| And if I should say, I will forget to speak, I will bow down my face and groan; | Якщо сказати мені: забуду я скарги мої, відкину похмурий вигляд свій і підбадьорюся; |

|
| I quake in all my limbs, for I know that thou wilt not leave me alone as innocent. | то тремчу від усіх страждань моїх, знаючи, що Ти не оголосиш мене невинним. |
|

|
| But since I am ungodly, why have I not died? | Якщо ж я винен, то для чого даремно томлюся? |
|

|

|
| For if I should wash myself with snow, and purge myself with pure hands, | Хоч би я обмився і сніговою водою і зовсім очистив руки мої, |
|

|
| thou hadst thoroughly plunged me in filth, and my garment had abhorred me. | то і тоді Ти зануриш мене у бруд, і буде гидувати мною одяг мій. |
|

|
| For thou art not man like me, with whom I could contend, that we might come together to judgment. | Тому що Він не людина, як я, щоб я міг відповідати Йому і йти разом з Ним на суд! |

|
33
|
| Would that he our mediator were present, and a reprover, and one who should hear the cause between both. | Немає між нами посередника, який поклав би руку свою на обох нас. |
|
34
|
34
|
| Let him remove his rod from me, and let not his fear terrify me: | Нехай відведе Він від мене жезл Свій, і страх Його нехай не жахає мене, — |
|

|
35
|
| so shall I not be afraid, but I will speak: for I am not thus conscious of guilt. | і тоді я буду говорити і не убоюся Його, бо я не такий сам у собі. |
