| Був голод у землі, більший за колишній голод, що був у дні Авраама; і пішов Ісаак до Авимелеха, царя Филистимського, у Герар. | And there was a famine in the land, besides the former famine, which was in the time of Abraam; and Isaac went to Abimelech the king of the Phylistines to Gerara. |

| Господь явився йому і сказав: не ходи в Єгипет; живи в землі, про яку Я скажу тобі, | And the Lord appeared to him and said, Go not down to Egypt, but dwell in the land, which I shall tell thee of. |
|

|
| подорожуй по цій землі, і Я буду з тобою і благословлю тебе, бо тобі і нащадкам твоїм дам усі землі ці і виконаю клятву [Мою], якою Я клявся Аврааму, батькові твоєму; | And sojourn in this land; and I will be with thee, and bless thee, for I will give to thee and to thy seed all this land; and I will establish my oath which I swore to thy father Abraam. |

| примножу нащадків твоїх, як зірки небесні, і дам нащадкам твоїм усі землі ці; благословляться в сімені твоєму всі народи земні, | And I will multiply thy seed as the stars of heaven; and I will give to thy seed all this land, and all the nations of the earth shall be blest in thy seed. |

| за те, що Авраам [батько твій] послухався голосу Мого і виконував, що Мною заповідано було виконувати: повеління Мої, постанови Мої і закони Мої. | Because Abraam thy father hearkened to my voice, and kept my injunctions, and my commandments, and my ordinances, and my statutes. |

| Ісаак оселився в Герарі. | And Isaac dwelt in Gerara. |

| Жителі місця того запитали про [Ревекку] дружину його, і він сказав: це сестра моя; тому що боявся сказати: дружина моя, щоб не вбили мене, думав він, жителі місця цього, за Ревекку, тому що вона прекрасна на вигляд. | And the men of the place questioned him concerning Rebecca his wife, and he said, She is my sister, for he feared to say, She is my wife, lest at any time the men of the place should slay him because of Rebecca, because she was fair. |

| Але коли вже багато часу він там прожив, Авимелех, цар Филистимський, подивившись у вікно, побачив, що Ісаак грається з Ревеккою, дружиною своєю. | And he remained there a long time, and Abimelech the king of Gerara leaned to look through the window, and saw Isaac sporting with Rebecca his wife. |

| І покликав Авимелех Ісаака і сказав: ось, це дружина твоя; як же ти сказав: вона сестра моя? Ісаак сказав йому: тому що я думав, не вмерти б мені заради неї. | And Abimelech called Isaac, and said to him, Is she then thy wife? why hast thou said, She is my sister? And Isaac said to him, I did so, for I said, Lest at any time I die on her account. |

| Але Авимелех сказав [йому]: навіщо ти зробив це з нами? ледве один з народу [мого] не з’єднався з дружиною твоєю, і ти ввів би нас у гріх. | And Abimelech said to him, Why hast thou done this to us? one of my kindred within a little had lain with thy wife, and thou wouldest have brought a sin of ignorance upon us. |

| І дав Авимелех повеління всьому народові, сказавши: хто доторкнеться до цього чоловіка і до дружини його, той відданий буде на смерть. | And Abimelech charged all his people, saying, Every man that touches this man and his wife shall be liable to death. |

| І посіяв Ісаак на землі тій і одержав у той рік ячменю у стократ: так благословив його Господь. | And Isaac sowed in that land, and he found in that year barley an hundred-fold, and the Lord blessed him. |

|
| І став великим чоловік цей і звеличувався більше і більше до того, що став дуже великим. | And the man was exalted, and advancing he increased, till he became very great. |
|

|
| У нього були стада дрібної і отари великої худоби і безліч орних земель, і филистимляни почали заздрити йому. | And he had cattle of sheep, and cattle of oxen, and many tilled lands, and the Phylistines envied him. |
|

15
|
| І всі колодязі, що їх викопали раби батька його за життя батька його Авраама, филистимляни завалили і засипали землею. | And all the wells which the servants of his father had dug in the time of his father, the Phylistines stopped them, and filled them with earth. |
|

|
| І Авимелех сказав Ісааку: відійди від нас, бо ти зробився набагато сильнішим за нас. | And Abimelech said to Isaac, Depart from us, for thou art become much mightier than we. |
|

| І Ісаак відійшов звідти, і розташувався наметами в долині Герарській, і оселився там. | And Isaac departed thence, and rested in the valley of Gerara, and dwelt there. |
|

| І знову викопав Ісаак колодязі води, що були викопані у дні Авраама, батька його, і які завалили филистимляни після смерти Авраама [батька його]; і назвав їх тими ж іменами, якими назвав їх [Авраам,] батько його. | And Isaac dug again the wells of water, which the servants of his father Abraam had dug, and the Phylistines had stopped them, after the death of his father Abraam; and he gave them names, according to the names by which his father named them. |

| І копали раби Ісаакові в долині [Герарській] і знайшли там колодязь води живої. | And the servants of Isaac dug in the valley of Gerara, and they found there a well of living water. |
|

|
| І сперечалися пастухи герарські з пастухами Ісаака, говорячи: наша вода. І він нарік колодязю ім’я: Есек, тому що сперечалися з ним. | And the shepherds of Gerara strove with the shepherds of Isaac, saying that the water was theirs; and they called the name of the well, Injury, for they injured him. |

| [Коли рушив звідти Ісаак,] викопали інший колодязь; сперечалися також і через нього; і він нарік йому ім’я: Ситна. | And having departed thence he dug another well, and they strove also for that; and he named the name of it, Enmity. |
|

| І він рушив звідти і викопав інший колодязь, про який уже не сперечалися, і нарік йому ім’я: Реховоф, тому що, сказав він, тепер Господь дав нам просторе місце, і ми розмножимося на землі. | And he departed thence and dug another well; and they did not strive about that; and he named the name of it, Room, saying, Because now the Lord has made room for us, and has increased us upon the earth. |

| Звідти перейшов він у Вирсавію. | And he went up thence to the well of the oath. |
|

|
| І в ту ніч явився йому Господь і сказав: Я Бог Авраама, батька твого; не бійся, бо Я з тобою; і благословлю тебе і розмножу нащадків твоїх, заради [батька твого] Авраама, раба Мого. | And the Lord appeared to him in that night, and said, I am the God of Abraam thy father; fear not, for I am with thee, and I will bless thee, and multiply thy seed for the sake of Abraam thy father. |

| І він влаштував там жертовник і закликав ім’я Господнє. І розкинув там намет свій, і викопали там раби Ісаакові колодязь, [у долині Герарській]. | And he built there an altar, and called on the name of the Lord, and there he pitched his tent, and there the servants of Isaac dug a well in the valley of Gerara. |

| Прийшов до нього з Герара Авимелех і Ахузаф, друг його, і Фихол, воєначальник його. | And Abimelech came to him from Gerara, and so did Ochozath his friend, and Phichol the commander-in-chief of his army. |

| Ісаак сказав їм: для чого ви прийшли до мене, коли ви зненавиділи мене і вислали мене від себе? | And Isaac said to them, Wherefore have ye come to me? whereas ye hated me, and sent me away from you. |
|

| Вони сказали: ми ясно побачили, що Господь з тобою, і тому ми сказали: поставимо між нами і тобою клятву й укладемо з тобою союз, | And they said, We have surely seen that the Lord was with thee, and we said, Let there be an oath between us and thee, and we will make a covenant with thee, |

| щоб ти не чинив нам зла, як і ми не доторкнулися до тебе, а робили тобі тільки добре і відпустили тебе з миром; тепер ти благословенний Господом. | that thou shalt do no wrong by us, as we have not abhorred thee, and according as we have treated thee well, and have sent thee forth peaceably; and now thou art blessed of the Lord. |

| Він зробив їм вечерю, і вони їли і пили. | And he made a feast for them, and they ate and drank. |

| І, вставши рано-вранці, поклялись один одному; і відпустив їх Ісаак, і вони пішли від нього з миром. | And they arose in the morning, and swore each to his neighbour; and Isaac sent them forth, and they departed from him in safety. |
|

| У той самий день прийшли раби Ісаакові і сповістили його про колодязь, який копали вони, і сказали йому: ми знайшли воду. | And it came to pass in that day, that the servants of Isaac came and told him of the well which they had dug; and they said, We have not found water. |
|

|
| І він назвав його: Шива. Тому ім’я місту тому Беершива [Вирсавія] до цього дня. | And he called it, Oath: therefore he called the name of that city, the Well of Oath, until this day. |

|
| І був Ісав сорока років, і взяв собі за дружин Ієгудифу, дочку Беера хеттеянина, і Васемафу, дочку Елона хеттеянина; | And Esau was forty years old; and he took to wife Judith the daughter of Beoch the Chettite, and Basemath, daughter of Helon the Chettite. |

| і вони були тягарем для Ісаака і Ревекки. | And they were provoking to Isaac and Rebecca. |
