| І побачила Рахиль, що вона не народжує дітей Якову, і позаздрила Рахиль сестрі своїй, і сказала Якову: дай мені дітей, а якщо не так, я вмираю. | And Rachel having perceived that she bore Jacob no children, was jealous of her sister; and said to Jacob, Give me children; and if not, I shall die. |

| Яків розгнівався на Рахиль і сказав [їй]: хіба я Бог, Який не дав тобі плоду утроби? | And Jacob was angry with Rachel, and said to her, Am I in the place of God, who has deprived thee of the fruit of the womb? |

| Вона сказала: ось служниця моя Валла; увійди до неї; нехай вона народить на коліна мої, щоб і я мала дітей від неї. | And Rachel said to Jacob, Behold my handmaid Balla, go in to her, and she shall bear upon my knees, and I also shall have children by her. |

| І дала вона Валлу, служницю свою, за дружину йому; і ввійшов до неї Яків. | And she gave him Balla her maid, for a wife to him; and Jacob went in to her. |

| Валла [служниця Рахилина] зачала і народила Якову сина. | And Balla, Rachel's maid, conceived, and bore Jacob a son. |

|
| І сказала Рахиль: розсудив мене Бог, і почув голос мій, і дав мені сина. Тому нарекла йому ім’я: Дан. | And Rachel said, God has given judgment for me, and hearkened to my voice, and has given me a son; therefore she called his name, Dan. |

| І ще зачала і народила Валла, служниця Рахилина, другого сина Якову. | And Balla, Rachel's maid, conceived yet again, and bore a second son to Jacob. |

| І сказала Рахиль: боротьбою сильною боролась я із сестрою моєю і перемогла. І нарекла йому ім’я: Неффалим. | And Rachel said, God has helped me, and I contended with my sister and prevailed; and she called his name, Nephthalim. |

| Лія побачила, що перестала народжувати, і взяла служницю свою Зелфу, і дала її Якову за дружину, [і він увійшов до неї]. | And Lea saw that she ceased from bearing, and she took Zelpha her maid, and gave her to Jacob for a wife; and he went in to her. |

|
| І Зелфа, служниця Ліїна, [зачала і] народила Якову сина. | And Zelpha the maid of Lea conceived, and bore Jacob a son. |

| І сказала Лія: додалося. І нарекла йому ім’я: Гад. | And Lea said, It is happily: and she called his name, Gad. |

| І [ще зачала] Зелфа, служниця Лії, [і] народила іншого сина Якову. | And Zelpha the maid of Lea conceived yet again, and bore Jacob a second son. |

|
| І сказала Лія: до блага мого, тому що блаженною будуть називати мене жінки. І нарекла йому ім’я: Асир. | And Lea said, I am blessed, for the women will pronounce me blessed; and she called his name, Aser. |

|
| Рувим пішов під час жнив пшениці, і знайшов мандрагорові яблука в полі, і приніс їх Лії, матері своїй. І Рахиль сказала Лії [сестрі своїй]: дай мені мандрагорів сина твого. | And Ruben went in the day of barley-harvest, and found apples of mandrakes in the field, and brought them to his mother Lea; and Rachel said to Lea her sister, Give me of thy son's mandrakes. |

| Але [Лія] сказала їй: невже мало тобі заволодіти чоловіком моїм, що ти домагаєшся і мандрагорів сина мого? Рахиль сказала: так нехай він ляже з тобою в цю ніч, за мандрагори сина твого. | And Lea said, Is it not enough for thee that thou hast taken my husband, wilt thou also take my son's mandrakes? And Rachel said, Not so: let him lie with thee to-night for thy son's mandrakes. |

| Яків прийшов з поля ввечері, і Лія вийшла йому назустріч і сказала: увійди до мене [сьогодні], тому що я купила тебе за мандрагори сина мого. І ліг він з нею в ту ніч. | And Jacob came in out of the field at even; and Lea went forth to meet him, and said, Thou shalt come in to me this day, for I have hired thee for my son's mandrakes; and he lay with her that night. |

| І почув Бог Лію, і вона зачала і народила Якову п’ятого сина. | And God hearkened to Lea, and she conceived, and bore Jacob a fifth son. |

| І сказала Лія: Бог дав відплату мені за те, що я віддала служницю мою чоловікові моєму. І нарекла йому ім’я: Іссахар [що значить відплата]. | And Lea said, God has given me my reward, because I gave my maid to my husband; and she called his name Issachar, which is, Reward. |

| І ще зачала Лія і народила Якову шостого сина. | And Lea conceived again, and bore Jacob a sixth son. |

| І сказала Лія: Бог дав мені прекрасний дарунок; тепер буде жити в мене чоловік мій, тому що я народила йому шість синів. І нарекла йому ім’я: Завулон. | And Lea said, God has given me a good gift in this time; my husband will choose me, for I have born him six sons: and she called his name, Zabulon. |

| Потім народила дочку і нарекла їй ім’я: Діна. | And after this she bore a daughter; and she called her name, Dina. |

| І згадав Бог про Рахиль, і почув її Бог, і відкрив утробу її. | And God remembered Rachel, and God hearkened to her, and he opened her womb. |

|
| Вона зачала і народила [Якову] сина, і сказала [Рахиль]: зняв Бог ганьбу мою. | And she conceived, and bore Jacob a son; and Rachel said, God has taken away my reproach. |
|

|
| І нарекла йому ім’я: Йосиф, сказавши: Господь дасть мені і другого сина. | And she called his name Joseph, saying, Let God add to me another son. |
|

|
| Після того, як Рахиль народила Йосифа, Яків сказав Лавану: відпусти мене, і піду я у своє місце, й у свою землю; | And it came to pass when Rachel had born Joseph, Jacob said to Laban, Send me away, that I may go to my place and to my land. |
|

|
| віддай [мені] дружин моїх і дітей моїх, за яких я служив тобі, і я піду, бо ти знаєш службу мою, яку я служив тобі. | Restore my wives and my children, for whom I have served thee, that I may depart, for thou knowest the service wherewith I have served thee. |

|
| І сказав йому Лаван: о, якби я знайшов благовоління перед очима твоїми! я помічаю, що за тебе Господь благословив мене. | And Laban said to him, If I have found grace in thy sight, I would augur well, for the Lord has blessed me at thy coming in. |

|
| І сказав: признач собі нагороду від мене, і я дам [тобі]. | Appoint me thy wages, and I will give them. |
|

|
| І сказав йому [Яків]: ти знаєш, як я служив тобі, і якою стала худоба твоя при мені; | And Jacob said, Thou knowest in what things I have served thee, and how many cattle of thine are with me. |
|

|
| бо мало було у тебе до мене, а стало багато; Господь благословив тебе з приходом моїм; коли ж я буду працювати для свого дому? | For it was little thou hadst before my time, and it is increased to a multitude, and the Lord God has blessed thee since my coming; now then, when shall I set up also my own house? |

|
| І сказав [йому Лаван]: що дати тобі? Яків сказав [йому]: не давай мені нічого. Якщо тільки зробиш мені, що я скажу, то я знову буду пасти і стерегти овець твоїх. | And Laban said to him, What shall I give thee? and Jacob said to him, Thou shalt not give me anything; if thou wilt do this thing for me, I will again tend thy flocks and keep them. |

|
| Я пройду сьогодні через усю отару овець твоїх; відокрем з нього всяку худобу з цятками і з плямами, усяку тварину чорну із овець, також із плямами і з цятками з кіз. Така худоба буде нагородою мені [і буде моєю]. | Let all thy sheep pass by to-day, and separate thence every grey sheep among the rams, and every one that is speckled and spotted among the goats—this shall be my reward. |

| І буде говорити за мене перед тобою справедливість моя в наступний час, коли прийдеш подивитися нагороду мою. Усяка коза не з цятками і не з плямами, і з овець не чорна, крадене це в мене. | And my righteousness shall answer for me on the morrow, for it is my reward before thee: whatever shall not be spotted and speckled among the goats, and grey among the rams, shall be stolen with me. |

| Лаван сказав [йому]: добре, нехай буде за твоїм словом. | And Laban said to him, Let it be according to thy word. |

| І відокремив у той день козлів строкатих і з плямами, і всіх кіз із цятками і з плямами, усіх, на яких було трохи білого, і всіх чорних овець, і віддав у руки синам своїм; | And he separated in that day the spotted and speckled he-goats, and all the spotted and speckled she-goats, and all that was grey among the rams, and every one that was white among them, and he gave them into the hand of his sons. |

| і призначив відстань між собою і між Яковом на три дні путі. Яків же пас іншу дрібну худобу Лаванову. | And he set a distance of a three days' journey between them and Jacob. And Jacob tended the cattle of Laban that were left behind. |

| І взяв Яків свіже пруття із тополі, мигдалю та явора, і повирізував на ньому [Яків] білі смуги, знявши до білизни кору, що на прутті, | And Jacob took to himself green rods of storax tree and walnut and plane-tree; and Jacob peeled in them white stripes; and as he drew off the green, the white stripe which he had made appeared alternate on the rods. |

| і поклав пруття з нарізкою перед худобою у водопійних коритах, куди худоба приходила пити, і де, приходячи пити, зачинала перед пруттям. | And he laid the rods which he had peeled, in the hollows of the watering-troughs, that whensoever the cattle should come to drink, as they should have come to drink before the rods, the cattle might conceive at the rods. |

| І зачинала худоба перед пруттям, і народжувалася худоба строката, і з цятками, і з плямами. | So the cattle conceived at the rods, and the cattle brought forth young speckled, and streaked and spotted with ash-coloured spots. |

| І відокремлював Яків ягнят і ставив худобу лицем до строкатої і всієї чорної худоби Лаванової; і тримав свої отари окремо і не ставив їх разом з худобою Лавана. | And Jacob separated the lambs, and set before the sheep a speckled ram, and every variegated one among the lambs, and he separated flocks for himself alone, and did not mingle them with the sheep of Laban. |

| Кожного разу, коли зачинала худоба міцна, Яків клав пруття в коритах перед очима худоби, щоб вона зачинала перед пруттям. | And it came to pass in the time wherein the cattle became pregnant, conceiving in the belly, Jacob put the rods before the cattle in the troughs, that they might conceive by the rods. |

| А коли зачинала худоба слабка, тоді він не клав. І діставалася слабка худоба Лавану, а міцна Якову. | But he did not put them in indiscriminately whenever the cattle happened to bring forth, but the unmarked ones were Laban's, and the marked ones Jacob's. |

|
| І стала ця людина дуже, дуже багатою, і було в нього безліч дрібної худоби [і великої худоби], і рабинь, і рабів, і верблюдів, і ослів. | And the man became very rich, and he had many cattle, and oxen, and servants, and maid-servants, and camels, and asses. |
