| Діна, дочка Лії, яку вона народила Якову, вийшла подивитися на дочок землі тієї. | And Dina, the daughter of Lea, whom she bore to Jacob, went forth to observe the daughters of the inhabitants. |

| І побачив її Сихем, син Еммора евеянина, князя землі тієї, і взяв її, і спав з нею, і вчинив над нею насильство. | And Sychem the son of Emmor the Evite, the ruler of the land, saw her, and took her and lay with her, and humbled her. |
|

|
| І приліпилася душа його до Діни, дочки Якова, і він полюбив дівчину і говорив до серця дівочого. | And he was attached to the soul of Dina the daughter of Jacob, and he loved the damsel, and he spoke kindly to the damsel. |

|
| І сказав Сихем Еммору, батькові своєму, говорячи: візьми мені цю дівчину за дружину. | Sychem spoke to Emmor his father, saying, Take for me this damsel to wife. |
|

|
| Яків чув, що [син Емморів] збезчестив Діну, дочку його, але оскільки сини його були з худобою його в полі, то Яків мовчав, поки не прийшли вони. | And Jacob heard that the son of Emmor had defiled Dina his daughter (now his sons were with his cattle in the plain). And Jacob was silent until they came. |

| І вийшов Еммор, батько Сихемів, до Якова, поговорити з ним. | And Emmor the father of Sychem went forth to Jacob, to speak to him. |

|
| Сини ж Якова прийшли з поля, і коли почули, то засмутилися мужі ті й запалали гнівом, тому що безчестя зробив він Ізраїлю, переспавши з дочкою Якова, а так не можна робити. | And the sons of Jacob came from the plain; and when they heard, the men were deeply pained, and it was very grievous to them, because the man wrought folly in Israel, having lain with the daughter of Jacob, and so it must not be. |

| Еммор став говорити їм, і сказав: Сихем, син мій, приліпився душею до дочки вашої; дайте ж її за дружину йому; | And Emmor spoke to them, saying, Sychem my son has chosen in his heart your daughter; give her therefore to him for a wife, |

|
| порідніться з нами; віддавайте за нас дочок ваших, а наших дочок беріть собі [за синів ваших]; | and intermarry with us. Give us your daughters, and take our daughters for your sons. |
|

|
| і живіть з нами; земля ця [простора] перед вами, живіть і промишляйте на ній і здобувайте її у володіння. | And dwell in the midst of us; and, behold, the land is spacious before you, dwell in it, and trade, and get possessions in it. |
|

|
| Сихем же сказав батьку її і братам її: тільки б мені знайти благовоління в очах ваших, я дам, що тільки скажете мені; | And Sychem said to her father and to her brothers, I would find grace before you, and we will give whatever ye shall name. |

|
| призначте найбільше віно й дарунки; я дам, що не скажете мені, тільки віддайте мені дівчину за дружину. | Multiply your demand of dowry very much, and I will give accordingly as ye shall say to me, only ye shall give me this damsel for a wife. |
|

|
| І відповіли сини Якова Сихему та Еммору, батькові його, з лукавством; а говорили так тому, що він збезчестив Діну, сестру їхню; | And the sons of Jacob answered to Sychem and Emmor his father craftily, and spoke to them, because they had defiled Dina their sister. |

|
| і сказали їм [Симеон і Левій, брати Діни, сини Ліїні]: не можемо цього зробити, віддати сестру нашу за чоловіка, який необрізаний, тому що це безчесно для нас; | And Symeon and Levi, the brothers of Dina, said to them, We shall not be able to do this thing, to give our sister to a man who is uncircumcised, for it is a reproach to us. |

|
| тільки за тієї умови ми погодимося з вами [й оселимося у вас], якщо ви будете як ми, щоб і у вас уся чоловіча стать була обрізана; | Only on these terms will we conform to you, and dwell among you, if ye also will be as we are, in that every male of you be circumcised. |
|

|
| і будемо віддавати за вас дочок наших і брати за себе ваших дочок, і будемо жити з вами, і складемо один народ; | And we will give our daughters to you, and we will take of your daughters for wives to us, and we will dwell with you, and we will be as one race. |
|

| а якщо не послухаєтеся нас у тому, щоб обрізатися, то ми візьмемо дочку нашу і відійдемо. | But if ye will not hearken to us to be circumcised, we will take our daughter and depart. |
|

|
| І сподобалися слова ці Еммору і Сихему, сину Еммора. | And the words pleased Emmor, and Sychem the son of Emmor. |

|
| Юнак не барився зробити це, тому що любив дочку Якова. А його більше за всіх поважали в домі батька його. | And the young man delayed not to do this thing, for he was much attached to Jacob's daughter, and he was the most honourable of all in his father's house. |
|

|
| І прийшли Еммор і Сихем, син його, до воріт міста свого, і стали говорити жителям міста свого і сказали: | And Emmor and Sychem his son came to the gate of their city, and spoke to the men of their city, saying, |

|
| ці люди мирні з нами; нехай вони селяться на землі і промишляють на ній; земля ж ось простора перед ними. Станемо брати дочок їхніх собі за дружин і наших дочок віддавати за них. | These men are peaceable, let them dwell with us upon the land, and let them trade in it, and behold the land is extensive before them; we will take their daughters to us for wives, and we will give them our daughters. |

| Тільки за тієї умови ці люди погоджуються жити з нами і бути одним народом, щоб і в нас обрізана була вся чоловіча стать, як вони обрізані. | Only on these terms will the men conform to us to dwell with us so as to be one people, if every male of us be circumcised, as they also are circumcised. |

|
| Чи не для нас отари їх, і маєтки їх, і вся худоба їх? Тільки [у тому] погодимося з ними, і будуть жити з нами. | And shall not their cattle and their herds, and their possessions, be ours? only in this let us conform to them, and they will dwell with us. |
|

|
| І послухалися Еммора і Сихема, сина його, всі, хто виходив з воріт міста його: і була обрізана вся чоловіча стать, — усі, що виходили з воріт міста його. | And all that went in at the gate of their city hearkened to Emmor and Sychem his son, and they were circumcised in the flesh of their foreskin every male. |

| На третій день, коли вони хворіли, два сини Якова, Симеон і Левій, брати Діни, взяли кожен свій меч, і сміливо напали на місто, й умертвили всю чоловічу стать; | And it came to pass on the third day, when they were in pain, the two sons of Jacob, Symeon and Levi, Dina's brethren, took each man his sword, and came upon the city securely, and slew every male. |

| і самого Еммора і Сихема, сина його, убили мечем; і взяли Діну з дому Сихемового і вийшли. | And they slew Emmor and Sychem his son with the edge of the sword, and took Dina out of the house of Sychem, and went forth. |

| Сини Якова прийшли до убитих і розграбували місто за те, що збезчестили [Діну] сестру їхню. | But the sons of Jacob came upon the wounded, and ravaged the city wherein they had defiled Dina their sister. |

|
| Вони взяли дрібну і велику худобу їх, і ослів їх, і все, що було в місті, і що було в полі; | And their sheep, and their oxen, and their asses they took, and all things whatsoever were in the city, and whatsoever were in the plain. |

|
| і все багатство їх, і всіх дітей їх, і дружин їх взяли в полон, і розграбували усе, що було в [місті, й усе, що було в] домах. | And they took captive all the persons of them, and all their store, and their wives, and plundered both whatever things there were in the city, and whatever things there were in the houses. |

|
| І сказав Яків Симеону і Левію: ви обурили мене, зробивши мене ненависним для [усіх] жителів цієї землі, для хананеїв і ферезеїв. У мене людей мало; зберуться проти мене, подолають мене, і знищений буду я і дім мій. | And Jacob said to Symeon and Levi, Ye have made me hateful so that I should be evil to all the inhabitants of the land, both among the Chananites and the Pherezites, and I am few in number; they will gather themselves against me and cut me in pieces, and I shall be utterly destroyed, and my house. |

| Вони ж сказали: а хіба можна чинити з сестрою нашою, як з блудницею! | And they said, Nay, but shall they treat our sister as an harlot? |
