| У той час Іуда відійшов від братів своїх і оселився поблизу одного одолламитянина, якому ім’я: Хира. | And it came to pass at that time that Judas went down from his brethren, and came as far as to a certain man of Odollam, whose name was Iras. |

| І побачив там Іуда дочку одного хананеянина, якому ім’я: Шуа; і взяв її і ввійшов до неї. | And Judas saw there the daughter of a Chananitish man, whose name was Sava; and he took her, and went in to her. |
|

|
| Вона зачала і народила сина; і він нарік йому ім’я: Ір. | And she conceived and bore a son, and called his name, Er. |

|
| І зачала знову, і народила сина, і нарекла йому ім’я: Онан. | And she conceived and bore a son again; and called his name, Aunan. |
|

|
| І ще народила сина [третього] і нарекла йому ім’я: Шела. Іуда був у Хезиві, коли вона народила його. | And she again bore a son; and called his name, Selom: and she was in Chasbi when she bore them. |

| І взяв Іуда дружину Ірові, первісткові своєму; ім’я їй Фамар. | And Judas took a wife for Er his first-born, whose name was Thamar. |

|
| Ір, первісток Іудин, був неугодний перед очима Господа, й умертвив його Господь. | And Er, the first-born of Judas, was wicked before the Lord; and God killed him. |
|

|
| І сказав Іуда Онану: увійди до дружини брата твого, одружися з нею, як дівер, і віднови сíм’я братові твоєму. | And Judas said to Aunan, Go in to thy brother's wife, and marry her as her brother-in-law, and raise up seed to thy brother. |

| Онан знав, що сíм’я буде не йому, і тому, коли входив до дружини брата свого, виливав [сíм’я] на землю, щоб не дати сімені братові своєму. | And Aunan, knowing that the seed should not be his—it came to pass when he went in to his brother's wife, that he spilled it upon the ground, so that he should not give seed to his brother's wife. |

| Злом було перед очима Господа те, що він робив; і Він умертвив його. | And his doing this appeared evil before God; and he slew him also. |

| І сказав Іуда Фамарі, невістці своїй [після смерти двох синів своїх]: живи вдовою в домі батька твого, доки підросте Шела, син мій. Тому що він сказав [у розумі своєму]: не помер би і він подібно до братів його. Фамар пішла і стала жити в домі батька свого. | And Judas said to Thamar, his daughter-in-law, Sit thou a widow in the house of thy father-in-law, until Selom my son be grown; for he said, Lest he also die as his brethren; and Thamar departed, and sat in the house of her father. |

| Минуло багато часу, і померла дочка Шуї, дружина Іудина. Іуда, утішившись, пішов у Фамну до охоронців худоби його, сам і Хира, друг його, одолламитянин. | And the days were fulfilled, and Sava the wife of Judas died; and Judas, being comforted, went to them that sheared his sheep, himself and Iras his shepherd the Odollamite, to Thamna. |

| І повідомили Фамар, говорячи: ось, свекор твій іде у Фамну стригти худобу свою. | And it was told Thamar his daughter-in-law, saying, Behold, thy father-in-law goeth up to Thamna, to shear his sheep. |

| І зняла вона із себе одяг удівства свого, покрила себе покривалом і, закрившись, сіла біля воріт Енаїма, що на дорозі до Фамни. Бо бачила, що Шела виріс, і вона не дана йому за дружину. | And having taken off the garments of her widowhood from her, she put on a veil, and ornamented her face, and sat by the gates of Ænan, which is in the way to Thamna, for she saw that Selom was grown; but he gave her not to him for a wife. |

| І побачив її Іуда і прийняв її за блудницю, тому що вона закрила лице своє. [І не впізнав її.] | And when Judas saw her, he thought her to be a harlot; for she covered her face, and he knew her not. |

| Він повернув до неї і сказав: я увійду до тебе. Тому що не знав, що це невістка його. Вона сказала: що ти даси мені, якщо ввійдеш до мене? | And he went out of his way to her, and said to her, Let me come in to thee; for he knew not that she was his daughter-in-law; and she said, What wilt thou give me if thou shouldest come in to me? |

| Він сказав: я надішлю тобі козеня з отари [моєї]. Вона сказала: чи даси ти мені заставу, поки пришлеш? | And he said, I will send thee a kid of the goats from my flock; and she said, Well, if thou wilt give me an earnest, until thou send it. |

| Він сказав: яку дати тобі заставу? Вона сказала: печатку твою, і перев’язь твою, і тростину твою, що в руці твоїй. І дав він їй і ввійшов до неї; і вона зачала від нього. | And he said, What is the earnest that I shall give thee? and she said, Thy ring, and thy bracelet, and the staff in thy hand; and he gave them to her, and went in to her, and she conceived by him. |

| І, вставши, пішла, зняла з себе покривало своє й одяглася в одяг удівства свого. | And she arose and departed, and took her veil from off her, and put on the garments of her widowhood. |

| Іуда ж послав козеня через друга свого одолламитянина, щоб взяти заставу з руки жінки, але він не знайшов її. | And Judas sent the kid of the goats by the hand of his shepherd the Odollamite, to receive the pledge from the woman; and he found her not. |
|

| І запитав жителів того місця, говорячи: де блудниця, що була в Енаїмі при дорозі? Але вони сказали: тут не було блудниці. | And he asked the men of the place, Where is the harlot who was in Ænan by the way-side? and they said, There was no harlot here. |

| І повернувся він до Іуди і сказав: я не знайшов її; та й жителі місця того сказали: тут не було блудниці. | And he returned to Judas, and said, I have not found her; and the men of the place say, There is no harlot here. |
|

| Іуда сказав: нехай вона візьме собі, аби тільки не стали над нами сміятися; ось, я посилав це козеня, але ти не знайшов її. | And Judas said, Let her have them, but let us not be ridiculed; I sent this kid, but thou hast not found her. |

| Минуло близько трьох місяців, і сказали Іуді, говорячи: Фамар, невістка твоя, впала у блуд, і ось, вона вагітна від блуду. Іуда сказав: виведіть її, і нехай вона буде спалена. | And it came to pass after three months, that it was told Judas, saying, Thamar thy daughter-in-law has grievously played the harlot, and behold she is with child by whoredom; and Judas said, Bring her out, and let her be burnt. |

| Але коли повели її, вона послала сказати свекру своєму: я вагітна від того, чиї ці речі. І сказала: впізнавай, чия ця печатка і перев’язь і тростина. | And as they were bringing her, she sent to her father-in-law, saying, I am with child by the man whose these things are; and she said, See whose is this ring and bracelet and staff. |

| Іуда впізнав і сказав: вона правіша за мене, тому що я не дав її Шелі, синові моєму. І не пізнавав її більше. | And Judas knew them, and said, Thamar is cleared rather than I, forasmuch as I gave her not to Selom my son: and he knew her not again. |

| Під час пологів її виявилося, що в утробі у неї близнюки. | And it came to pass when she was in labour, that she also had twins in her womb. |

| І під час пологів її з’явилася рука [одного]; і взяла повитуха і нав’язала йому на руку червону нитку, сказавши: цей вийшов першим. | And it came to pass as she was bringing forth, one thrust forth his hand, and the midwife having taken hold of it, bound upon his hand a scarlet thread, saying, This one shall come out first. |

| Але він повернув руку свою; і ось, вийшов брат його. І вона сказала: як ти подолав собі перешкоду? І наречено йому ім’я: Фарес. | And when he drew back his hand, then immediately came forth his brother; and she said, Why has the barrier been cut through because of thee? and she called his name, Phares. |

| Потім вийшов брат його з червоною ниткою на руці. І наречено йому ім’я: Зара. | And after this came forth his brother, on whose hand was the scarlet thread; and she called his name, Zara. |
