| Яків жив у землі подорожування батька свого [Ісаака], у землі Ханаанській. | And Jacob dwelt in the land where his father sojourned, in the land of Chanaan. |

| Ось житіє Якова. Йосиф, сімнадцяти років, пас худобу [батька свого] разом із братами своїми, будучи отроком, з синами Валли і з синами Зелфи, дружин батька свого. І доносив Йосиф недобрі про них чутки до [Ізраїля] батька їх. | And these are the generations of Jacob. And Joseph was seventeen years old, feeding the sheep of his father with his brethren, being young; with the sons of Balla, and with the sons of Zelpha, the wives of his father; and Joseph brought to Israel their father their evil reproach. |

| Ізраїль любив Йосифа більше за всіх синів своїх, тому що він був сином старости його, — і зробив йому різнобарвний одяг. | And Jacob loved Joseph more than all his sons, because he was to him the son of old age; and he made for him a coat of many colours. |

| І побачили брати його, що батько їх любить його більше, ніж усіх братів його; і зненавиділи його і не могли говорити з ним дружньо. | And his brethren having seen that his father loved him more than all his sons, hated him, and could not speak anything peaceable to him. |

|
| І бачив Йосиф сон, і розповів [його] братам своїм: і вони зненавиділи його ще більше. | And Joseph dreamed a dream, and reported it to his brethren. |

|
| Він сказав їм: вислухайте сон, який я бачив: | And he said to them, Hear this dream which I have dreamed. |
|

|
| ось, ми в’яжемо снопи посередині поля; і ось, мій сніп встав і став прямо; і ось, ваші снопи стали навкруги і поклонилися моєму снопові. | I thought ye were binding sheaves in the middle of the field, and my sheaf stood up and was erected, and your sheaves turned round, and did obeisance to my sheaf. |

| І сказали йому брати його: невже ти будеш царювати над нами? невже будеш володіти нами? І зненавиділи його ще більше за сни його і за слова його. | And his brethren said to him, Shalt thou indeed reign over us, or shalt thou indeed be lord over us? And they hated him still more for his dreams and for his words. |

| І бачив він ще інший сон і розповів його [батькові своєму і] братам своїм, говорячи: ось, я бачив ще сон: ось, сонце і місяць і одинадцять зірок поклоняються мені. | And he dreamed another dream, and related it to his father, and to his brethren, and said, Behold, I have dreamed another dream: as it were the sun, and the moon, and the eleven stars did me reverence. |

| І він розповів батькові своєму і братам своїм; і насварив його батько його і сказав йому: що це за сон, який ти бачив? невже я і твоя мати, і твої брати прийдемо поклонитися тобі до землі? | And his father rebuked him, and said to him, What is this dream which thou hast dreamed? shall indeed both I and thy mother and thy brethren come and bow before thee to the earth? |

| Брати його досаджували на нього, а батько його запам’ятав це слово. | And his brethren envied him; but his father observed the saying. |

|
| Брати його пішли пасти худобу батька свого в Сихем. | And his brethren went to feed the sheep of their father to Sychem. |
|

|
| І сказав Ізраїль Йосифові: брати твої чи не пасуть у Сихемі? піди, я пошлю тебе до них. Він відповів йому: ось я. | And Israel said to Joseph, Do not thy brethren feed their flock in Sychem? Come, I will send thee to them; and he said to him, Behold, I am here. |

| [Ізраїль] сказав йому: піди, подивися, чи здорові брати твої і чи ціла худоба, і принеси мені відповідь. І послав його з долини Хевронської; і він прийшов у Сихем. | And Israel said to him, Go and see if thy brethren and the sheep are well, and bring me word; and he sent him out of the valley of Chebron, and he came to Sychem. |

| І знайшов хтось його, що блукав у полі, і запитав його той чоловік, говорячи: чого ти шукаєш? | And a man found him wandering in the field; and the man asked him, saying, What seekest thou? |

|
| Він сказав: я шукаю братів моїх; скажи мені, де вони пасуть? | And he said, I am seeking my brethren; tell me where they feed their flocks. |
|

|
| І сказав той чоловік: вони пішли звідси, бо я чув, як вони говорили: підемо в Дофан. І пішов Йосиф за братами своїми і знайшов їх у Дофані. | And the man said to him, They have departed hence, for I heard them saying, Let us go to Dothaim; and Joseph went after his brethren, and found them in Dothaim. |

| І побачили вони його здаля, і раніше ніж він наблизився до них, стали замишляти проти нього, щоб убити його. | And they spied him from a distance before he drew nigh to them, and they wickedly took counsel to slay him. |
|

|
| І сказали один одному: ось, іде сновидець; | And each said to his brother, Behold, that dreamer comes. |
|
20
|
20
|
| підемо тепер, і вб’ємо його, і кинемо його в який-небудь рів, і скажемо, що хижий звір з’їв його; і побачимо, що буде із його снів. | Now then come, let us kill him, and cast him into one of the pits; and we will say, An evil wild beast has devoured him; and we shall see what his dreams will be. |

| І почув це Рувим і порятував його від рук їхніх, сказавши: не вб’ємо його. | And Ruben having heard it, rescued him out of their hands, and said, Let us not kill him. |

|
| І сказав їм Рувим: не проливайте крови; киньте його у рів, що у пустелі, а руки не накладайте на нього. Це говорив він [з тим наміром], щоб урятувати його від рук їхніх і повернути його до батька його. | And Ruben said to them, Shed not blood; cast him into one of these pits in the wilderness, but do not lay your hand upon him; that he might rescue him out of their hands, and restore him to his father. |

| Коли Йосиф прийшов до братів своїх, вони зняли з Йосифа одежу його, одежу різнобарвну, яка була на ньому, | And it came to pass, when Joseph came to his brethren, that they stripped Joseph of his many-coloured coat that was upon him. |
|

|
| і взяли його і кинули його у рів; рів же той був порожнім; води в ньому не було. | And they took him and cast him into the pit; and the pit was empty, it had not water. |
|

|
| І сіли вони їсти хліб, і, глянувши, побачили, ось, іде з Галаада караван ізмаїльтян, і верблюди їхні несуть стираксу, бальзам і ладан: ідуть вони відвезти це в Єгипет. | And they sat down to eat bread; and having lifted up their eyes they beheld, and lo, Ismaelitish travellers came from Galaad, and their camels were heavily loaded with spices, and resin, and myrrh; and they went to bring them to Egypt. |

| І сказав Іуда братам своїм: яка користь, якщо ми вб’ємо брата нашого і сховаємо кров його? | And Judas said to his brethren, What profit is it if we slay our brother, and conceal his blood? |

| Підемо, продамо його ізмаїльтянам, а руки наші нехай не будуть на ньому, тому що він брат наш, плоть наша. Брати його послухалися | Come, let us sell him to these Ismaelites, but let not our hands be upon him, because he is our brother and our flesh; and his brethren hearkened. |

| і, коли проходили купці мадіамські, витягли Йосифа з рову і продали Йосифа ізмаїльтянам за двадцять срібників; а вони відвели Йосифа в Єгипет. | And the men, the merchants of Madian, went by, and they drew and lifted Joseph out of the pit, and sold Joseph to the Ismaelites for twenty pieces of gold; and they brought Joseph down into Egypt. |

| Рувим же прийшов знову до рову; і ось, немає Йосифа в рові. І роздер він одяг свій, | And Ruben returned to the pit, and sees not Joseph in the pit; and he rent his garments. |
|

|
| і повернувся до братів своїх, і сказав: отрока нема, а я, куди я дінуся? | And he returned to his brethren and said, The boy is not; and I, whither am I yet to go? |
|

|
| І взяли одяг Йосифа, і закололи козла, і вимазали одяг кров’ю; | And having taken the coat of Joseph, they slew a kid of the goats, and stained the coat with the blood. |

|
| і послали різнобарвний одяг, і принесли до батька свого, і сказали: ми це знайшли; подивися, чи сина твого цей одяг, чи ні. | And they sent the coat of many colours; and they brought it to their father, and said, This have we found; know if it be thy son's coat or no. |

|
| Він упізнав його і сказав: це одяг сина мого; хижий звір з’їв його; очевидно, розтерзаний Йосиф. | And he recognised it, and said, It is my son's coat, an evil wild beast has devoured him; a wild beast has carried off Joseph. |

| І розідрав Яків одяг свій, і одяг веретище на стегна свої, й оплакував сина свого багато днів. | And Jacob rent his clothes, and put sackcloth on his loins, and mourned for his son many days. |

|
| І зібрались усі сини його і всі дочки його, щоб утішити його; але він не хотів утішитися і сказав: з печаллю зійду до сина мого в пекло. Так оплакував його батько його. | And all his sons and his daughters gathered themselves together, and came to comfort him; but he would not be comforted, saying, I will go down to my son mourning to Hades; and his father wept for him. |

| Мадіанитяни ж продали його в Єгипті Потифару, царедворцеві фараона, начальникові охоронців. | And the Madianites sold Joseph into Egypt; to Petephres, the eunuch of Pharao, captain of the guard. |
