|
| Коли сядеш споживати їжу з володарем, то ретельно спостерігай, що перед тобою, | If thou sit to sup at the table of a prince, consider attentively the things set before thee: |

|
| і постав перешкоду в гортані твоїй, якщо ти жадібний. | and apply thine hand, knowing that it behoves thee to prepare such meats: but if thou art very insatiable, |
|

|

|
| Не захоплюйся ласими стравами його; це — оманна їжа. | desire not his provisions; for these belong to a false life. |
|

|

|
| Не піклуйся про те, щоб нажити багатство; залиш такі думки твої. | If thou art poor, measure not thyself with a rich man; but refrain thyself in thy wisdom. |
|

|
| Спрямуєш очі твої на нього, і — його вже немає; тому що воно зробить собі крила і, як орел, полетить до неба. | If thou shouldest fix thine eye upon him, he will disappear; for wings like an eagle's are prepared for him, and he returns to the house of his master. |
|

|
| Не споживай їжі у людини заздрісної і не захоплюйся ласими стравами її; | Sup not with an envious man, neither desire thou his meats: |
|

|
| тому що, які думки у душі її, така й вона; «їж і пий», говорить вона тобі, а серце її не з тобою. | so he eats and drinks as if any one should swallow a hair, and do not bring him in to thyself, nor eat thy morsel with him: |
|

|
| Шматок, який ти з’їв, виблюєш, і добрі слова твої ти витратиш даремно. | for he will vomit it up, and spoil thy fair words. |
|

|
| У вуха нерозумного не говори, тому що він знехтує розумні слова твої. | Say nothing in the ears of a fool, lest at any time he sneer at thy wise words. |
|

|
| Не пересувай межі давньої і на поля сиріт не заходь, | Remove not the ancient landmarks; and enter not upon the possession of the fatherless: |
|

|
| тому що Захисник їх сильний; Він вступиться у справу їх з тобою. | for the Lord is their redeemer; he is mighty, and will plead their cause with thee. |
|

|
| Прихили серце твоє до навчання і вуха твої — до розумних слів. | Apply thine heart to instruction, and prepare thine ears for words of discretion. |
|

|
| Не залишай юнака без покарання: якщо покараєш його різкою, він не помре; | Refrain not from chastening a child; for if thou beat him with the rod, he shall not die. |
|

|
14
|
| ти покараєш його різкою і спасеш душу його від пекла. | For thou shalt beat him with the rod, and shalt deliver his soul from death. |
|

|
15
|
| Сину мій! якщо серце твоє буде мудре, то порадіє і моє серце; | Son, if thy heart be wise, thou shalt also gladden my heart; |
|

|
16
|
| і нутрощі мої будуть радіти, коли вуста твої будуть говорити справедливе. | and thy lips shall converse with my lips, if they be right. |
|

|
| Нехай не заздрить серце твоє грішникам, але нехай перебуває воно в усі дні у страху Господньому; | Let not thine heart envy sinners: but be thou in the fear of the Lord all the day. |
|

|
18
|
| тому що є майбутнє, і надія твоя не втрачена. | For if thou shouldest keep these things, thou shalt have posterity; and thine hope shall not be removed. |
|

|
| Слухай, сину мій, і будь мудрий, і направляй серце твоє на пряму путь. | Hear, my son, and be wise, and rightly direct the thoughts of thine heart. |
|

|
| Не будь між тими, хто упивається вином, між тими, хто пересичується м’ясом: | Be not a wine-bibber, neither continue long at feasts, and purchases of flesh: |
|

|
| тому що п’яниця і той, хто пересичується, зубожіють, і сонливість одягне в руб’я. | for every drunkard and whoremonger shall be poor; and every sluggard shall clothe himself with tatters and ragged garments. |
|

|
| Слухайся батька твого: він породив тебе; і не зневажай матері твоєї, коли вона і постаріє. | Hearken, my son, to thy father which begot thee, and despise not thy mother because she is grown old. |
|

|
| Купи істину і не продавай мудрости і вчення і розуму. | |
|

|

|
| Торжествує батько праведника, і хто породив мудрого, радіє за нього. | A righteous father brings up his children well; and his soul rejoices over a wise son. |
|

|
| Нехай веселиться батько твій і нехай торжествує мати твоя, що народила тебе. | Let thy father and thy mother rejoice over thee, and let her that bore thee be glad. |
|

|
| Сину мій! віддай серце твоє мені, і очі твої нехай спостерігають за путями моїми, | My son, give me thine heart, and let thine eyes observe my ways. |
|

|
| тому що блудниця — глибока прірва, і чужа дружина — вузький колодязь; | For a strange house is a vessel full of holes; and a strange well is narrow. |
|

|
| вона, як розбійник, сидить у засідці і множить між людьми законопорушників. | For such a one shall perish suddenly; and every transgressor shall be cut off. |
|

|
| У кого виття? у кого стогін? у кого сварки? у кого горе? у кого рани без причини? у кого багряні очі? | Who has woe? who trouble? who has quarrels? and who vexations and disputes? who has bruises without a cause? whose eyes are livid? |
|

|
| У тих, які довго сидять за вином, які приходять шукати вина приправленого. | Are not those of them that stay long at wine? are not those of them that haunt the places where banquets are? Be not drunk with wine; but converse with just men, and converse with them openly. |

| Не дивися на вино, як воно червоніє, як воно іскриться в чаші, як воно світиться рівно: | For if thou shouldest set thine eyes on bowls and cups, thou shalt afterwards go more naked than a pestle. |
|

|
| згодом, як змій, воно вкусить, і вжалить, як аспид; | But at last such a one stretches himself out as one smitten by a serpent, and venom is diffused through him as by a horned serpent. |
|

|
| очі твої будуть дивитися на чужих дружин, і серце твоє заговорить про розпусне, | Whenever thine eyes shall behold a strange woman, then thy mouth shall speak perverse things. |
|

|
| і ти будеш, як той, що спить серед моря, і як той, що спить на верхівці щогли. | And thou shalt lie as in the midst of the sea, and as a pilot in a great storm. |
|

|
| [І скажеш:] «били мене, мені не було боляче; штовхали мене, я не відчував. Коли прокинуся, знову буду шукати того самого». | And thou shalt say, They smote me, and I was not pained; and they mocked me, and I knew it not: when will it be morning, that I may go and seek those with whom I may go in company? |
