|
| Завіт уклав я з очима моїми, щоб не помишляти мені про дівчину. | I made a covenant with mine eyes, and I will not think upon a virgin. |

|
| Яка ж доля мені від Бога з висоти? І яка спадщина від Вседержителя з небес? | Now what portion has God given from above? and is there an inheritance given of the Mighty One from the highest? |
|

|
| Чи не для нечестивого загибель, і чи не для того, хто робить зло, напасть? | Alas! destruction to the unrighteous, and rejection to them that do iniquity. |
|

|

|
| Чи не бачив Він шляхів моїх, і чи не рахував усіх моїх кроків? | Will he not see my way, and number all my steps? |
|

|
5
|
| Якщо я ходив у суєті, і якщо нога моя поспішала на лукавство; — | But if I had gone with scorners, and if too my foot has hasted to deceit: |

|
| нехай зважать мене на терезах правди, і Бог дізнається про мою непорочність. | (for I am weighed in a just balance, and the Lord knows my innocence:) |

| Якщо стопи мої ухилилися від шляху і серце моє ходило слідом за очима моїми, і якщо що-небудь нечисте пристало до рук моїх, | if my foot has turned aside out of the way, or if mine heart has followed mine eye, and if too I have touched gifts with my hands; |

|
| то нехай я сію, а інший їсть, і нехай паростки мої будуть викорінені. | then let me sow, and let others eat; and let me be uprooted on the earth. |
|

|
| Якщо серце моє захоплювалося жінкою і я чинив підступи біля дверей мого ближнього, — | If my heart has gone forth after another man's wife, and if I laid wait at her doors; |
|

|
| нехай моя дружина меле на іншого, і нехай інші знущаються з неї, | then let my wife also please another, and let my children be brought low. |
|

|

|
| тому що це — злочин, це — беззаконня, що підлягає суду; | For the rage of anger is not to be controlled, in the case of defiling another man's wife. |
|

|
| це — вогонь, який з’їдає до знищення, який викорінив би все добро моє. | For it is a fire burning on every side, and whomsoever it attacks, it utterly destroys. |
|

|
| Якщо я зневажав права слуги і служниці моєї, коли вони мали суперечку зі мною, | And if too I despised the judgment of my servant or my handmaid, when they pleaded with me; |
|

|
| то що став би я робити, коли Бог повстав би? І коли б Він глянув на мене, що міг би я відповісти Йому? | what then shall I do if the Lord should try me? and if also he should at all visit me, can I make an answer? |

|
| Чи не Він, Який створив мене в утробі, створив і його й однаково утворив нас в утробі? | Were not they too formed as I also was formed in the womb? yea, we were formed in the same womb. |
|

|
| Чи відмовляв я нужденним у їх проханні і чи томив очі вдови? | But the helpless missed not whatever need they had, and I did not cause the eye of the widow to fail. |
|

|
| Чи один я з’їдав шматок мій, і чи не їв від нього і сирота? | And if too I ate my morsel alone, and did not impart of it to the orphan; |
|

|
| Бо з дитинства він зростав зі мною, як з батьком, і від утроби матері моєї я піклувався про вдову. | (for I nourished them as a father from my youth, and guided them from my mother's womb.) |

19
|
| Якщо я бачив кого, хто гинув без одягу, і бідного без покрова, — | And if too I overlooked the naked as he was perishing, and did not clothe him; |
|
20
|
20
|
| чи не благословляли мене стегна його, і чи не був він зігрітий вовною овець моїх? | and if the poor did not bless me, and their shoulders were not warmed with the fleece of my lambs; |
|

|
| Якщо я піднімав руку мою на сироту, коли бачив допомогу собі біля воріт, | if I lifted my hand against an orphan, trusting that my strength was far superior to his: |
|

22
|
| то нехай плече моє відпаде від спини, і рука моя нехай відламається від ліктя, | let then my shoulder start from the blade-bone, and my arm be crushed off from the elbow. |
|

|
| тому що страшне для мене покарання від Бога: перед величчю Його не устояв би я. | For the fear of the Lord constrained me, and I cannot bear up by reason of his burden. |
|

|
| Чи покладав я на золоті опору мою і чи говорив скарбу: ти — надія моя? | If I made gold my treasure, and if too I trusted the precious stone; |
|
25
|
25
|
| Чи радів я, що багатство моє було великим, і коли рука моя придбала багато? | and if too I rejoiced when my wealth was abundant, and if too I laid my hand on innumerable treasures: |
|

|
| Дивлячись на сонце, як воно сяє, і на місяць, як він велично прямує, | (do we not see the shining sun eclipsed, and the moon waning? for they have not power to continue:) |
|

|
27
|
| чи спокусився я в таїні серця мого, і чи цілували вуста мої руку мою? | and if my heart was secretly deceived, and if I have laid my hand upon my mouth and kissed it: |
|

|
28
|
| Це також був би злочин, що підлягає суду, тому що я відрікся б тоді від Бога Всевишнього. | let this also then be reckoned to me as the greatest iniquity: for I should have lied against the Lord Most High. |

|
| Чи радів я погибелі ворога мого і чи торжествував, коли нещастя осягало його? | And if too I was glad at the fall of mine enemies, and mine heart said, Aha! |
|

|
| Не дозволяв я вустам моїм грішити прокляттям душі його. | let then mine ear hear my curse, and let me be a by-word among my people in my affliction. |
|

|
| Чи не говорили люди намету мого: о, якби ми м’ясом його не наситилися? | And if too my handmaids have often said, Oh that we might be satisfied with his flesh; (whereas I was very kind: |

|
| Подорожній не ночував на вулиці; двері мої я відчиняв перехожому. | for the stranger did not lodge without, and my door was opened to every one that came:) |
|

|
| Якби я ховав провини мої, як людина, приховуючи в грудях моїх пороки мої, | or if too having sinned unintentionally, I hid my sin; |
|

|
34
|
| то я боявся б великої громади, і презирство одноплемінників страшило б мене, і я мовчав би і не виходив би за двері. | (for I did not stand in awe of a great multitude, so as not to declare boldly before them:) and if too I permitted a poor man to go out of my door with an empty bosom: |

|
| О, якби хто вислухав мене! Ось моє бажання, щоб Вседержитель відповів мені, і щоб захисник мій зробив запис. | (Oh that I had a hearer,) and if I had not feared the hand of the Lord; and as to the written charge which I had against any one, |

|
| Я носив би його на плечах моїх і покладав би його, як вінець; | I would place it as a chaplet on my shoulders, and read it. |

|
| оголосив би йому число кроків моїх, зблизився б з ним, як із князем. | And if I did not read it and return it, having taken nothing from the debtor: |

|
| Якщо волала проти мене земля моя і скаржилися на мене борозни її; | If at any time the land groaned against me, and if its furrows mourned together; |
|

|
39
|
| якщо я їв плоди її без оплати й обтяжував життя хліборобів, | and if I ate its strength alone without price, and if too I grieved the heart of the owner of the soil, by taking aught from him: |
|

|
40
|
| то нехай замість пшениці виростає осот і замість ячменя кукіль. Слова Іова скінчилися. | then let the nettle come up to me instead of wheat, and a bramble instead of barley. And Job ceased speaking. |
