| Багато трудів призначено кожній людині, і важке ярмо на синах Адама, з дня виходу з утроби матері їх до дня повернення до матері усіх. | Great travail is created for every man, and an heavy yoke is upon the sons of Adam, from the day that they go out of their mother's womb, till the day that they return to the mother of all things. |

| Думка про очікуване і день смерти породжує у них міркування і страх серця. | Their imagination of things to come, and the day of death, trouble their thoughts, and cause fear of heart; |

| Від того, хто сидить на славному престолі і до поваленого на землі і у поросі, | from him that sitteth on a throne of glory, unto him that is humbled in earth and ashes; |

|
| від того, хто носить порфиру і вінець, і до одягненого у руб’я, — | from him that weareth purple and a crown, unto him that is clothed with a linen frock. |

|
| у всякого досада і ревнощі, і знічення, і занепокоєння, і страх смерти, й обурення, і сварка, і під час заспокоєння на постелі нічний сон бентежить розум його. | Wrath, and envy, trouble, and unquietness, fear of death, and anger, and strife, and in the time of rest upon his bed his night sleep, do change his knowledge. |

| Мало, майже зовсім не має він спокою, і тому й уві сні він, як удень, насторожі: | Little or nothing is his rest, and afterward he is in his sleep as in a day of keeping watch, troubled in the vision of his heart, as if he were escaped out of a battle. |

| будучи збентеженим серцевими своїми мріями, як той, що утік з поля битви, під час безпеки своєї він пробуджується і не може надивуватися, що нічого не було страшного. | When all is safe, he awaketh, and marvelleth that the fear was nothing. |

| Хоч це буває з усякою плоттю, від людини до худоби, але у грішників у сім разів більше за це. | Such things happen unto all flesh, both man and beast, and sevenfold more upon sinners. |

| Смерть, убивство, сварка, меч, нещастя, голод, руйнація й удари, — | Death, and bloodshed, strife, and sword, calamities, famine, tribulation, and the scourge; |

| усе це — для беззаконних; і потоп був для них. | these things are created for the wicked, and through them came the flood. |

|
| Усе, що від землі, повертається у землю, і що з води, повертається у море. | All things that are of the earth do turn to the earth again: and that which is of the waters doth return into the sea. |

|
| Усякий подарунок і несправедливість будуть знищені, а вірність буде стояти повік. | All bribery and injustice shall be blotted out: but true dealing shall endure for ever. |

| Маєтки несправедливих, як потік, висохнуть і, як сильний грім при заливному дощі, прогримлять. | The goods of the unjust shall be dried up like a river, and shall vanish with noise, like a great thunder in rain. |

| Хто відкриває руку, той буває веселий; а злочинці остаточно загинуть. | While he openeth his hand he shall rejoice: so shall transgressors come to nought. |

| Нащадки нечестивих не примножать гілок, і нечисті корені — на стрімкій скелі: | The children of the ungodly shall not bring forth many branches: but are as unclean roots upon a hard rock. |

| осока біля усякої води і на березі ріки скошується раніше усякої іншої трави. | The weed growing upon every water and bank of a river shall be pulled up before all grass. |

| Доброчинність, як рай, повна благословінь, і милостиня перебуває повік. | Bountifulness is as a most fruitful garden, and mercifulness endureth for ever. |
|

|
| Життя задоволеного своєю долею і трудівника солодке; але перевершує обох той, хто знаходить скарб. | To labour, and to be content with that a man hath, is a sweet life: but he that findeth a treasure is above them both. |

| Діти і побудова міста увічнюють ім’я, але кращою за те й інше вважається бездоганна дружина. | Children and the building of a city continue a man's name: but a blameless wife is counted above them both. |

| Вино і музика веселять серце, але краще за те й інше — любов до мудрости. | Wine and music rejoice the heart: but the love of wisdom is above them both. |

|
| Сопілка і гуслі роблять приємним спів, але краще за них — приємний язик. | The pipe and the psaltery make sweet melody: but a pleasant tongue is above them both. |

| Приємність і краса бажані для очей твоїх, але більше тієї й іншої — зелень посіву. | Thine eye desireth favour and beauty: but more than both the first sprouting of corn. |

| Друг і приятель сходяться часом, але дружина з чоловіком — завжди. | A friend and companion never meet amiss: but above both is a wife with her husband. |
|

|
| Брати і покровителі — під час скорботи, але вірніше за тих та інших спасає милостиня. | Brethren and help are against time of trouble: but alms shall deliver more than them both. |

| Золото і срібло утверджують стопи, але надійнішою за те й інше визнається добра порада. | Gold and silver make the foot stand sure; but counsel is esteemed above them both. |

| Багатство і сила підносять серце, але вищий за те — страх Господній: | Riches and strength lift up the heart: but the fear of the Lord is above them both: there is no want in the fear of the Lord, and it needeth not to seek help. |

| у страху Господньому немає недоліку, і немає потреби шукати при ньому допомоги; | The fear of the Lord is a fruitful garden, and covereth him above all glory. |

| страх Господній — як благословенний рай, і наділяє його усякою славою. | My son, lead not a beggar's life; for better it is to die than to beg. |

|
| Сину мій! не живи життям убогим: краще померти, ніж просити милостиню. | The life of him that dependeth on another man's table is not to be counted for a life; for he polluteth himself with other men's meat: but a wise man well nurtured will beware thereof. |

| Хто задивляється на чужий стіл, того життя — не життя: він принижує душу свою чужими стравами; | Begging is sweet in the mouth of the shameless: but in his belly there shall burn a fire. |

| але людина розумна і вихована застереже себе від того. | |

| У вустах безсоромного солодким здається прохання милостині, але в утробі його вогонь запалає. |
