| Хто любить свого сина, той нехай частіше карає його, щоб згодом утішатися ним. | He that loveth his son causeth him oft to feel the rod, that he may have joy of him in the end. |

| Хто наставляє свого сина, той буде мати допомогу від нього і серед знайомих буде хвалитися ним. | He that chastiseth his son shall have joy in him, and shall rejoice of him among his acquaintance. |

| Хто навчає свого сина, той збуджує заздрість у ворога, а перед друзями буде радіти за нього. | He that teacheth his son grieveth the enemy: and before his friends he shall rejoice of him. |

|
| Помер батько його — і ніби не вмирав, тому що залишив після себе подібного до себе; | Though his father die, yet he is as though he were not dead: for he hath left one behind him that is like himself. |

|
| за життя свого він дивився на нього й утішався, і при смерті своїй не засмутився; | While he lived, he saw and rejoiced in him: and when he died, he was not sorrowful. |

|
| для ворогів він залишив у ньому месника, а для друзів — того, хто воздає подяку. | He left behind him an avenger against his enemies, and one that shall requite kindness to his friends. |

|
| Поблажливий до сина буде перев’язувати рани його, і при всякому крику його буде тривожитися серце його. | He that maketh too much of his son shall bind up his wounds; and his bowels will be troubled at every cry. |

| Необ’їжджений кінь буває впертим, а син, залишений на свою волю, стає зухвалим. | An horse not broken becometh headstrong: and a child left to himself will be wilful. |

| Плекай дитя, і воно злякає тебе; грай з ним, і воно засмутить тебе. | Cocker thy child, and he shall make thee afraid: play with him, and he will bring thee to heaviness. |

| Не смійся з ним, щоб не горювати з ним і потім не скреготати зубами своїми. | Laugh not with him, lest thou have sorrow with him, and lest thou gnash thy teeth in the end. |

| Не давай йому волі в юності і не потурай нерозуму його. | Give him not liberty in youth. |

|
| Нагинай шию його в юності і скрушай ребра його, доки воно молоде, щоб, зробившись упертим, воно не вийшло з покори тобі. | Beat his sides while he is still young, lest becoming stubborn, he disobey thee. |

| Учи сина твого і трудися над ним, щоб не мати тобі засмучення від непристойних вчинків його. | Train up thy son, and exercise him with work, lest by thy looseness thou stumble. |

| Краще бідняк здоровий і міцний силами, ніж багатій з виснаженим тілом; | Better is the poor, being sound and strong of constitution, than a rich man that is afflicted in his body. |

|
| здоров’я і добрий стан тіла дорожче за всяке золото, і міцне тіло краще за незліченне багатство; | Health and good estate of body are above all gold, and a strong body above infinite wealth. |

| немає багатства кращого за тілесне здоров’я, і немає радости вищої за радість сердечну; | There is no riches above a sound body, and no joy above the joy of the heart. |

| краще смерть, ніж гірке життя, або хвороба, що постійно триває. | Death is better than a bitter life or continual sickness. |

| Солодощі, піднесені до зімкнутих уст, те саме, що їжа, поставлена на могилі. | Delicacies poured upon a mouth shut up are as messes of meat set upon a grave. |

|
| Яка користь ідолу від жертви? він ні їсти, ні нюхати не може: | What good doeth the offering unto an idol? for neither can it eat nor smell: so is he that is persecuted of the Lord. |

| так переслідуваний від Господа, | He seeth with his eyes and groaneth, as an eunuch that embraceth a virgin and sigheth. |

| дивлячись очима і стогнучи, подібний до євнуха, який обіймає дівчину і зітхає. | Give not over thy mind to heaviness, and afflict not thyself in thine own counsel. |

| Не віддавайся суму душею твоєю і не муч себе своєю підозріливістю; | The gladness of the heart is the life of man, and the joyfulness of a man prolongeth his days. |

| веселощі серця — життя людини, і радість чоловіка — довголіття; | Love thine own soul, and comfort thy heart, remove sorrow far from thee: for sorrow hath killed many, and there is no profit therein. |

| люби душу твою й утішай серце твоє і віддаляй від себе сум, | Envy and wrath shorten the life, and carefulness bringeth age before the time. |

| бо сум багатьох убив, а користи у ньому немає. | I awaked up last of all, as one that gathereth after the grape-gatherers: by the blessing of the Lord I profited, |

| Ревнощі і гнів скорочують дні, а турбота — раніше часу приводить старість. | and filled my winepress like a gatherer of grapes. Consider that I laboured not for myself only, but for all them that seek learning. |

| Відкрите і добре серце піклується і про поживу свою. | Hear me, O ye great men of the people, and hearken with your ears, ye rulers of the congregation. |
