|
| І не ставай ворогом з друга, бо погане ім’я одержує у частку сором і ганьбу; так — і грішник двоязичний. | |

| Не піднось себе у помислах душі твоєї, щоб душа твоя не була розтерзана, як віл: | |

|
| листя твоє ти знищиш і плоди твої погубиш, і залишишся, як сухе дерево. | Thou shalt eat up thy leaves, and lose thy fruit, and leave thyself as a dry tree. |

|
| Душа лукава погубить свого власника і зробить його посміховиськом ворогів. | A wicked soul shall destroy him that hath it, and shall make him to be laughed to scorn of his enemies. |
|

|
| Солодкі вуста примножать друзів, і добромовний язик примножить приязнь. | Sweet language will multiply friends: and a fairspeaking tongue will increase kind greetings. |
|

|
| Тих, хто живе з тобою у мирі, нехай буде багато, а радником твоїм — один з тисячі. | Be in peace with many: nevertheless have but one counsellor of a thousand. |

|
| Якщо хочеш придбати друга, набувай його після випробування і не скоро довіряйся йому. | If thou wouldest get a friend, prove him first, and be not hasty to credit him. |
|

|
| Буває друг у потрібний для нього час, і не залишиться з тобою у день скорботи твоєї; | For some man is a friend for his own occasion, and will not abide in the day of thy trouble. |

|
| і буває друг, який перетворюється на ворога і відкриє сварку на ганьбу твою. | And there is a friend, who being turned to enmity and strife will discover thy reproach. |
|

|
| Буває другом учасник у трапезі, і не залишиться з тобою у день скорботи твоєї. | Again, some friend is a companion at the table, and will not continue in the day of thy affliction. |

|
| У маєтку твоєму він буде як ти, і зухвало буде поводитися з домашніми твоїми; | But in thy prosperity he will be as thyself, and will be bold over thy servants. |
|

|
| але якщо ти будеш принижений, він буде проти тебе і сховається від лиця твого. | If thou be brought low, he will be against thee, and will hide himself from thy face. |
|

|
| Віддаляйся від ворогів твоїх і будь обачний з друзями твоїми. | Separate thyself from thine enemies, and take heed of thy friends. |
|

|
| Вірний друг — міцний захист: хто знайшов його, знайшов скарб. | A faithful friend is a strong defence: and he that hath found such an one hath found a treasure. |
|

|
| Вірному другові немає ціни, і немає міри доброті його. | Nothing doth countervail a faithful friend, and his excellency is invaluable. |
|

|
| Вірний друг — лікування для життя, і ті, що бояться Господа, знайдуть його. | A faithful friend is the medicine of life; and they that fear the Lord shall find him. |
|

|
| Хто боїться Господа, направляє дружбу свою так, що, який він сам, таким стає і друг його. | Whoso feareth the Lord shall direct his friendship aright: for as he is, so shall his neighbour be also. |

|
| Сину мій! від юности твоєї віддайся навчанню, і до сивини твоєї знайдеш мудрість. | My son, gather instruction from thy youth up: so shalt thou find wisdom till thine old age. |
|

|
| Приступай до неї як той, що оре і сіє, й очікуй добрих плодів її: | Come unto her as one that ploweth and soweth, and wait for her good fruits: for thou shalt not toil much in labouring about her, but thou shalt eat of her fruits right soon. |

|
| бо недовгий час потрудишся в обробленні її, і скоро будеш їсти плоди її. | She is very unpleasant to the unlearned: he that is without understanding will not remain with her. |
|

|
| Для невігласів вона дуже сувора, і нерозумний не залишиться з нею: | She will lie upon him as a mighty stone of trial; and he will cast her from him ere it be long. |
|

|
| вона буде на ньому як важкий камінь випробування, і він не забариться скинути її. | For wisdom is according to her name, and she is not manifest unto many. |
|

|
| Премудрість відповідає імені своєму, і небагатьом відкривається. | Give ear, my son, receive my advice, and refuse not my counsel, |

| Послухай, сину мій, і прийми думку мою, і не відкинь поради моєї. | and put thy feet into her fetters, and thy neck into her chain. |
|

|
| Наклади на ноги твої пута її і на шию твою ланцюг її. | Bow down thy shoulder, and bear her, and be not grieved with her bonds. |
|

|
| Підстав їй плече твоє, і носи її і не тяготися кайданами її. | Come unto her with thy whole heart, and keep her ways with all thy power. |
|

|
| Наблизься до неї всією душею твоєю, і всією силою твоєю дотримуйся шляхів її. | Search, and seek, and she shall be made known unto thee: and when thou hast got hold of her, let her not go. |
|

|
| Досліджуй і шукай, і вона буде пізнана тобою і, зробившись володарем її, не залишай її; | For at the last thou shalt find her rest, and that shall be turned to thy joy. |

|
| бо нарешті ти знайдеш у ній заспокоєння, і вона обернеться на радість тобі. | Then shall her fetters be a strong defence for thee, and her chains a robe of glory. |
|

|
| Пута її будуть тобі міцним захистом, і ланцюги її — славним одягом; | For there is a golden ornament upon her, and her bands are purple lace. |

|
| бо на ній прикраса золота, і пута її — гіацинтові нитки. | Thou shalt put her on as a robe of honour, and shalt put her about thee as a crown of joy. |
|

|
| Як у одежу слави, ти облачишся в неї і покладеш її на себе як вінець радости. | My son, if thou wilt, thou shalt be taught: and if thou wilt apply thy mind, thou shalt be prudent. |
|

|
| Сину мій! якщо ти побажаєш її, то навчишся, і якщо віддасися їй душею твоєю, то будеш до всього здатний. | If thou love to hear, thou shalt receive understanding: and if thou bow thine ear, thou shalt be wise. |

| Якщо з любов’ю будеш слухати її, то зрозумієш її, і якщо прихилиш вухо твоє, то будеш мудрий. | Stand in the multitude of the elders; and cleave unto him that is wise. |

|
| Бувай у зібранні старців, і хто мудрий, приліпися до того; люби слухати всяку священну повість, і притчі розумні нехай не вислизають від тебе. | Be willing to hear every godly discourse: and let not the parables of understanding escape thee. |

| Якщо побачиш розумного, ходи до нього з раннього ранку, і нехай нога твоя стирає пороги дверей його. | And if thou seest a man of understanding, get thee betimes unto him, and let thy foot wear the steps of his door. |

| Розмірковуй над повеліннями Господа і завжди повчайся у заповідях Його: Він укріпить твоє серце, і бажання премудрости дасться тобі. | Let thy mind be upon the ordinances of the Lord, and meditate continually in his commandments: he shall establish thine heart, and give thee wisdom at thine own desire. |
